Sure, in a conference anchored by someone annually as terrible as SJSU and one or two others (AFA), I’m not surprised WCC is better metrically. But, between the two, you could take a beating in the Mountain and still keep your bid prospects. Historically, at least, albeit not recently.

BYU has gotten some suspicious bids in the past being in the WCC. Like, metrically, total head scratchers. The records were better in the MWC and they were playing in a more competitive conference (even if it didn’t have a Gonzaga type, though Utah and UNM were pretty good then). Lucky with some post-season exposure, but not like what it once had.

Historically, the WCC's biggest weakness was too many bottom dwellers. This year, the only "sure win" was Portland. Part of that is BYU regressing. I also give credit to San Diego for stepping up their game. Their current coach has racked up 40 wins over his first 2 seasons.Hesitate to even say this because C2 is right. Something's wrong & I don't want to downplay it.

If I had to point to one thing, I'd say most of the Lone Peak kids never panned out as hoped. We lost Frank Jackson to Duke, Eric Mika to Italy(?) & Nick Emery to off-court issues.

The scoreboard begs to differ. USU has the better coaching staff, has finished the season ranked twice in the current Indy/MWC era (0 times for BYU), and is recruiting on par with BYU (USU is benefitting a lot from the portal while BYU is losing contributors). The two programs are moving in opposite directions.

Yeah, BYU is still king in that state until proven otherwise.

And, BYU basketball beat Utah State by 15 points earlier this year. 7 in a row now.

Yet, USU will get a an at-large bid.

I’ve heard that although starting out the season pretty decent, Rose has completely lost the team. It also doesn’t sound like he’s going to be terminated so it should be an interesting offseason.

When he recruited an entire HS team (coach included) and then let them run the zoo by failing to discipline kids like Emery, he let the team culture get out of hand. But in the WCC as in independent football, the options for attracting quality coaching have gone down. So it’s on with the status quo.
