More importantly, would UTEP be listed if they had your budget....

Thanks, and now if I can find where they talk about the methodology they used to determine the numbers. Assuming teams accumulate points for various sports based on where they finished in those sports in their respective conferences, it makes me wonder how they can then rank teams from different conferences against one another. Do they for example assign winning the ACC conference championship in basketball the same number of points as winning the Southland conference in the same sport? If not, how do they stagger the points among all the various conferences and sports?

It's incredulous to me that UTSA would actually be 288 out of 295 when I'm almost certain that we would beat a decent number of those smaller schools ahead of us in most of the sports we compete in. I'm sure the same can be said of a host of other schools as well. Not that I think UTSA should be a lot higher, but I just can't accept these numbers as legitimate without a sound methodology for how they were calculated. Mind you, it's not rocket science to do an intra-conference director's cup ranking, and that, to me, is the main thing I take from it - how we rank against the others in our own conference. But ranking everyone against everyone else in an inter-conference ranking is something altogether different, so I'm really wondering how they put this together.

I dont even know what this is but if its about sports I find it strange that a school that wins 6 to 7 conference championships year after year wouldnt get any points.

Every year Western doubles the next closest school in CUSA championships the below article is from 2017 and I dont think it changed that much between then and now...

maybe championships are not important in this Directors Cup?

Quote:WKU enjoyed seven regular-season or tournament conference championships this season, the most of any of C-USA’s 14 schools. UTEP and Rice were second in the conference with four apiece.

That marked the third straight year the school has led C-USA in league titles. WKU won eight regular-season or tourney titles in 2014-15, its first year in the league, and six in 2015-16.

The Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers have combined for 21 Conference USA championships since 2014-15. The next closest school in the league on that list is Rice, with 10.

In fact, WKU has won more conference championships the last three years than seven league members combined. Charlotte, Marshall, Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic, UTSA, Old Dominion and UAB have combined for 19 conference titles across all sports since 2014-15, two less than WKU’s 21.

Women's Volleyball is not included, for some reason, while Men's is.

So how do you value a athletic department on championships or points for participation? If I read the rules correctly and I'm still not sure I did. Someone could win CUSA FB and Mens and Womens basketball, regular season and the tourney and all 3 not ranked in the USA Today polls . They will be ranked below a school with a top 10 ranked rowing team and that school played in 4 more of the 19 sports.

So as I said conference championships dont matter. As a matter of fact participation is more important than winning championships in your conference. I personally would take championships over that point system. But that's just me.

Quote: Conference Championships/National Polls
An institution's finish in conference championships or ranking in national polls, with the exception of the FBS football (formerly I-A) poll (USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll), will not count toward the point tally in the Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup standings. All points are based on an institution's finish in the NCAA or NAIA championships.

This is really only useful for comparing within conferences and with similar conferences, because of how it scores.

The Directors Cup is about where you finish in the NCAA not the conference. That said I would argue why there is a very direct correlation in a league like ours. Since you only accumulate points for NCAA achievement and most of the sports in our league are one bid then winning the conference tourneys is about the only way to even have a chance to earn Directors cup points. That’s why you have in the past but didn’t this years.
