Saw on TV this morning that members of local black clergy had a meeting to discuss gun violence in the wake of Southaven, El Paso and Dayton. They want "weapons of mass murder" banned and white nationalists added to the terrorist list.


Of course, the 5 or 6 stories before that one were each about shootings in north Memphis, south Memphis, one on Watkins, one in southeast Memphis (Shelby Dr area). Added all up and its about 8-10 people shot over the last few days. I'd bet a month's pay that none of them were committed by white nationalists and handguns were used in every one.

That's a popular misconception. We do not have huge areas of vacant buildings nor do we suffer from huge rat infestations. There are currently over 14 billion dollars worth of development in downtown alone I believe. We do suffer from a high number of murders but so do most major cities. I actually believe that race relations in Memphis are better than many other cities.

We don't have the numbers of race driven events here that we see in other cities.
I can think of one riot as the result of a police action in recent memory and that involved US Marshall's gunning down a young man who exited his car brandishing a weapon. I can think of one BLM movement to block an interstate. I interact with a large cross section of the population every day and almost all are pleasant encounters regardless of racial differences.

Memphis has its problems to be sure but not to the extent that I would trash the reputation of the city for it.

Memphis is far more New Orleans or St Louis than Baltimore...that said, if you don’t wanna live here...don’t!...we’ve got like 1.3 million in our metro and that’s more than enough IMHO
