True story: We have more trees today than we have for the last several hundred years since we've been burning fossil fuels instead of trees for energy and heat.

That and we replant, and attempt at least to put out the forest fires.

I've heard/read we have more trees now than when the Pilgrims first set foot.

You want more of something and good stewardship? Make it profitable for someone. Funny, it seems to work, like most all the time.

But are the trees mature and fully grown? A lot of young sapling trees probably isn't doing us much good as far as carbon capture goes I'm guessing. I suspect the tree cover when the U.S. was first starting out as a nation seemed more extensive than it is currently.

I would think we aren't cutting down the trees for paper purposes either the way we used to in the 20th century. That's a by-product of the digital age of information. The only deforestation of note is unfortunately clearing land for either massive farming or new neighborhoods.

Tree planting and reforestation and managed harvests and wildfire fighting have been going on for 100's of years now. So yes.
