Steph Curry to sponsor creation of golf programs at Howard University
https://www.golfchannel.com/news/steph-c...university

Men's and women's golf is coming to Howard University – and with the help of a golf-obsessed NBA superstar.

The Washington Post reported Monday that Golden State Warriors guard and avid golfer Stephen Curry is making a seven-figure donation to the Washington, D.C.-based university so that it can add a pair of Division-I golf programs to its athletics lineup.

“I was blessed at a young age that we could afford to play,” Curry told the paper. “I just think about how many kids, especially from underserved communities, have the talent to play but just don’t have the funds or the resources.”

Curry was partly inspired by Otis Ferguson, a senior at Howard who turned down an offer to play collegiate golf in order to attend the school, which is among more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the country (only 30 of them have golf programs). Ferguson, who helped form a golf club at Howard, had sent Curry several emails about the progress of the nearly-40-person group and how he had talked to the university president about possibly adding an official team.

After the NBA season ended, Curry got with Howard officials and worked out a sponsorship plan. The donation is reportedly set to be paid out over six years so that Howard, which hasn't had a golf team since the 1970s and never a D-I program in its 152-year history, can have to time to become self-sustainable.

The school projects it will take about a year to hire coaches, recruit players and find a place to play and practice. Players on both teams will be expected to volunteer with Eat. Learn. Play., Curry's foundation that encourages healthy development in children.

Golf is one of the cheapest D1 sports to have, other than cross-country. I'm surprised that every D-1 athletic department with a budget deficit hasn't turned to golf.

Actually golf is one of the most expensive per participant. Data from University of Cincinnati:

cost / participant Sport
$131,085 Men's Basketball
$ 32,441 Women's Basketball
$ 21,586 Football
$ 15,284 Women's Volleyball
$ 12,732 Baseball
$ 10,595 Women's Golf
$ 10,389 Women's Tennis
$ 10,299 Men's Golf
$ 6,627 Women's Swimming & Diving
$ 4,995 Men's Soccer
$ 3,635 Women's Lacrosse
$ 2,944 Men's Swimming & Diving
$ 2,710 Women's Track & Field
$ 2,516 Men's Track & Field

I'm a little surprised by Volleyball, but that probably explains why most schools do not carry the Men's side, even though almost every High School has it. I cannot for the life of me figure out why Women's Swimming cost so much more than men's (Coach must be really well paid).

Golf is not cheap. Between the coaches (you are competing for Golf Pros who are in demand), green fees (not cheap, and you need membership for daily practice) and travel, golf is one of the more high end sports. Lacrosse is far more cost efficient than Tennis or Golf.

Forgot to mention. This is a very cool thing Steph Curry is doing. The whole Curry family is amazing. The parents raised them right.

There's about the same number of away volleyball matches as away basketball games, so roughly the same cost for plane tickets, hotel nights, meals on the road, etc. Not surprising that the total cost is almost as much as the cost of baseball or softball.

Keep in mind that both D-1 HBCU conferences sponsor Women's Bowling. That might be even less expensive than golf plus you don't need a large course to practice on.

Universities should get out of funding sports.

women's volleyball is considered a head count sport. All scholarships are supposed to be full-ride, no partials.

Yeah, this is the correct reason, travel isn't any more than tennis. I think that is also why Women's Swimming & Diving is more than double Men's, scholarships.

Mods,

Do we need regional insults like this? Beside he's making false claims about his State. (Note, when he says South he's likely using the local slang meaning of NC, SC and parts of GA only ... the rest of you are "fake South" I guess)

High Schools in SC with WVB

High Schools in SC with MVB

Boy's are fewer than girls, but it's not insignificant. It's actually doing quite well in North Carolina.

He means it as an insult, but the patriots on the board realize that the majority of the USA's fruits and nuts (and vegetables) are grown in California :)

So you are admitting and providing ample evidence that your own statement:

Quote:I'm a little surprised by Volleyball, but that probably explains why most schools do not carry the Men's side, [b]even though almost every High School has it.
is wrong.

The number of male volleyball programs in South Carolina is 19, a minuscule amount of programs compared to schools who sponsor athletics. Hell, one of the organizations listed, Greenville Hurricanes, ISN'T EVEN A SCHOOL.

http://greenvillehurricaneathletics.webs...re/Welcome

In the midlands region around Columbia consisting of Richland, Lexington, Kershaw, Sumter, Fairfield, Calhoun, and Newberry counties there exactly one school that offers male volleyball. Hardly "every high school".

Don't get mad at me when you make a factually incorrect statement and I prove it wrong. Next time I suggest that you do a little research before you make definitive statements.
