It will be interesting to see about his interest in athletics. He's coming from a non-Division 1 school, both of his children go to non-Division 1 schools. He probably doesn't have a lot of background dealing with Division 1 sports and may not care if that's part of his job!! I guess we will all have to wait until he has something to say on the issue before any judgements can be made!! I just would have felt better if he was from Michigan or USC, etc!!!! I guess I should have said , he's had no first hand dealing with Div 1 sports in his former positions, including Oregon.

This is what he said in the TW.
Upham, an admitted sports fan, said his experience at Oregon taught him the importance of athletics to university life, as well. Oregon went from football doormat to Rose Bowl participant while he was there.
Once the school gained football prominence, he said, it attracted new students and donors it would not have in the past. The football success also brought in enough money to make the entire athletic department financially self-sufficient, Upham said.
"The transformation that occurred as a result of that success was nothing short of phenomenal," he said.

Sounds better already, except the stuff about making the Athletic Dept self supporting, that could be tuff at Tulsa!!! Oregon, BCS, has the fan base and alumni to do that..

He also wants to have better financial aid packages. The guy appears to be the perfect balance between academic and athletic excellence.

From what I've read and heard through the grapevine, we hired a good one. Everybody I've talked to is impressed with him.
