I count 8 from the OP. So, I guess 8 out of 11 current members. What’s more relevant would be how many have done it while in the AAC. Off the top of my head, I think everybody listed, but Tulsa. Pretty impressive range in a short period of time.

Since the inception of the American in 2013, six teams ranked in the Final AP...

4x Central Florida
3x Memphis
2x Cincinnati
2x Navy
2x South Florida
1x Houston

Thx for taking the time to look it up...nice east/west distribution.

No more than Clemson after ten years of Tommy Bowden prior to Sweeney.

Fair enough. No doubt there are others.

Man, Davie and Willingham were clunkers. How about Lane Kiffin, Derek Dooley and Butch Jones in Knoxville? John Cooper at Ohio State - 13 years. Rich Rod, Brady Hoke and Jim Harbaugh at Meechigan - zero natty's, zero conference chips, one (1) major bowl win (Sugar), overall bowl record 2-7.

That 2002 team led by Philip Rivers was really good. Best team in the ACC that year, in my opinion, even though they finished second. They were the only team with 10 wins, which was State's only 10 win season ever.

State had a lot of good teams that ended up with 7 or 8 wins. They were one of the few teams who seemed to be able to beat FSU in the early years of their time in the ACC. But they would still end up with 7 or 8 wins.

Cooper didn't win Natty's or Bowl games, but he won like 90% of his games. Not quite comparable to some of the other names on the list.

True, but he went 2-10-1 against Michigan I believe. Compare him to Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer. No comparison.

Interestingly, the 2009 title game was between Texas, the top team of the 00s and Alabama, the top team of the teens. Meanwhile, Ohio St. and Oklahoma flipped places, OU 2nd in the noughts, Ohio St. 4th in the noughts and then the reverse in the teens.

Oklahoma, Ohio St., LSU and Georgia were the only schools in the top 10 in both decades.

RE: ranked teams BCS era to present
Great work, bullet. Thanks for posting.

On a related note, I would like to know how many times a program has been in the final rankings (in addition to the "points" the programs have amassed). For example, FSU and MSU are tied at 10th with 102 points from 2010 to 2019. How many times was each of the two ranked at the end of the season during that time span (not asking you to take the time to compile, bullet; just curious)? So, and for that time period .. if FSU was ranked, say, all 10 times and MSU was ranked, say, only six times ... FSU had (on paper) the "better" decade of the two (despite both having 102 points in rankings).

So this is cumulative final ranking at the end of the seasons. So 2000 would be for the 1999 season. If not, the first season of the BCS era was 1999. VT played FSU in the 2000 sugar bowl for the National Championship.

Amazing how runs of excellence (or mediocrity) sometimes coincide with decades. Texas is #1 in the nougats, but #37 in the teens. It was the same program, even the same coach for half the decade of the teens. Alabama experienced the same issue, but in opposite decades.

This is evidence of the profound impact that Saban had on LSU. He not only won during the five seasons he was there, he created foundational improvements in the program that have carried over to this day.

He may be Public Enemy #1 of almost 15 year's standing with LSU fans for leaving for the Dolphins and then returning for Alabama, but if anyone every deserved a statue outside Tiger Stadium, it's Saban. I know for sure that a similar list of the 1990s wouldn't have LSU anywhere near the Top 10.

RE: ranked teams BCS era to present
Top 5 finishes 1968 to present. I've previously posted how dominant 20 programs have been (the 17 with AP MNCs + Oregon, Washington and Georgia) since 1984 when BYU won the title. I extended it back to 1968. 1968 was when the AP started regularly listing a top 20 (prior to that it was sometimes just top 10). It also happens to be the first year I really remember the college football season. This list shows the 9 bluebloods + the 3 Florida newcomers as the clear top 12. Even more so when you exclude the last 4 years. The 4 SEC members of the middle class-UGA, Tennessee, LSU and Auburn were basically tied prior to the last 4 years just behind the top 12. Clemson has moved their way into that group.

The 20 programs (Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Miami, Florida St., Clemson, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio ST., Penn ST., Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Washington, Oregon, Colorado) have won 50 of the 52 AP titles. BYU and Pitt are the only exceptions. The top 12 are only schools with more than 8 top 5 finishes. The 20 are the only schools with more than 3 top 5 finishes (all have at least 5). In addition to all but two of the top spots, they have all but 7 of the 2nd place finishes (TCU, Virginia Tech, Utah, Arizona St., Pitt, SMU and Georgia Tech the exceptions-GT was coaches MNC that year) and all but 5 of the 3rd place (TCU, Stanford, Michigan St., Oklahoma St., Arkansas). They combine for 39 of the 52 4th and 5th place finishes. So they have 220 of the 260 top 5 finishes. The top 12 alone have 172.

Below is the list and the list without 2016-2019. (formats better on my screen than when I post--first column after the school is the number of top 5 finishes over the 52 years 1968-2019; 2nd in points counting 1st as 5, 2nd as 4, etc.; 3rd is # of MNCs; 4th is top 5 1968-2015, 5th is points 1968-2015 and 6ths is MNCs 1968-2015.
