RE: COVID-19 POLL: First Division 1 Shoe to Drop
NIU-Chicago makes so much sense. They could play a few basketball games at the Chicago campus to try to better tie the DeKalb campus and the athletic brand in the big city. It makes so much sense that the Chicago politicians and bureaucrats will make sure it never happens.
There’s a place for schools that enroll 1300 students—DIII. You’re welcome Blue Hose.

Presbyterian is also in heavy debt. That is why they are in trouble of closing. There was a school that was almost up there with Presbyterian in endowment, but still close. Moving up to D1 too quickly before growing your enrollment first is the issue, and second, not accepting non-traditional students which is hurting the privates.

NIU needs enrollment and Chicago State needs credibility.
https://www.nwherald.com/2019/09/12/niu-...s/ajtzqbj/ "Fall enrollment at NIU hasn’t been this low since 1966, when its reported total enrollment was 16,440. NIU’s total enrollment continued to grow through most of the 1970s until the school became the second largest by enrollment statewide. Records show fall enrollment has declined in each of the past 10 years since 2009, when there were 24,424 students enrolled."

NE Illinois or Governor's St. are the ones that should absorb Chicago St. NIU doesn't need a campus in South Chicago.

Presbyterian is probably the one most in danger here outside Chicago St. SC has so many D1 schools (12), with a population of only 5 million or so, and PC is probably #12 right now. 50 miles from Greenville, 60 from Columbia, and they’ve already dropped football to non-scholarship and are playing independent ball this year before they go to the PFL.
Clinton is a small old mill town where most support Carolina or Clemson. They’d be a much better fit in D2 with Newberry, their old rival, but they’ll hold on till the bitter end.
If SC State flirted with dropping D1, the black community of the state would raise heck. They still draw 10K+ to football games. The school has been at threat of closing for the last 15 years, but the legislature has stopped it.
Why would they really care if they were in the Central Athletic Conference or Southern Athletic Conference, still with neighboring HBCUs?

I really like the idea of NIU-Chicago. I would be all for some college consolidation.

Why would this be a bad thing? A lot of schools should merge.

What was the last school to drop?
My guess is it's a school in a poorly run state.

Without looking it up, I'd guess Savannah St with Centenary gentlemanly bowing out before them and NEIU before Centenary.
Winston-Salem aborted a move-up.

Birmingham-Southern dropped to D3 around the time Centenary dropped. New Orleans was going to but aborted it.

COVID-19 POLL: First Division 1 Shoe to Drop
It's funny you all support NIU-Chicago by having NIU absorb Chicago St, it's widely reviled on the NIU board as absurd and a waste of resources

How does the NIU board seek to increase enrollment? The school went from 25,000 students to 14,000 students.

You don't have to convince me, I am for the idea. We've already started making concessions on admissions standards

I do have an idea. I think NIU should create a second campus in Hoffman Estates. The school has a MBA location in Hoffman Estates. There is room to build dorms and, eventually, take over the Sears Headquarters. This could be a campus for 5,000 students.
The Chicago State/NIU strategy is my secondary thought.
NIU is a really good school. The state of Illinois has abandoned her universities.

Make Hoffman Estates a campus of UIC. UIC, Ill St, and U of I seem to be the only schools that get special treatment.
