The Big West certainly should have let Sacramento State in over Cal State Bakersfield.

That wasn't going to happen unless the Big West said we want football again. Bringing in Sac State would have required another addition - Portland State - to go down that path. They chose the non-football option.

Had Butterly been the commissioner at back then, he might have pushed for a revived football league.

With the Dixie St program moving up the West now has 14 FCS programs. If that number were to climb to 16 I think it would make sense to have two conferences: one for old guard Big Sky members and then a more southern conference for the likes of Sac St, UC Davis, Cal Poly, S Utah, NAU, Dixie St, etc.

The WAC could be that 2nd shell. UC Davis and Cal Poly probably only participate as fb affiliates.
