Tiffin Joins List of Schools Cutting Sports; Drops Three
And another school joins the list - three sports cut by Tiffin.

—-
Tiffin University has discontinued its equestrian and men’s and women’s swim and dive programs immediately, Athletic Director Lonny Allen announced Tuesday.

“These are trying times for many institutions and Tiffin University is not immune to these times,” Allen said. “President Schumacher and I have looked at the athletic department as a whole. While this is a difficult decision to make, we feel it is appropriate for the health of the department and University.”

Scholarships for current equestrian and swim and dive student-athletes will be honored for the duration of their academic careers. Student-athletes who would like to join another institution’s roster will be released without penalty and are free to transfer immediately.

This comes as no surprise. A lot of the Ohio D-2 schools are struggling financially.

Swimming and diving seems like an odd one to cut. I'd think it would have a relatively high number of athletes for its cost.

Looking at Tiffin's website, it looks like they use the local YMCA for swimming & diving. Maybe the rental costs are too high?

Do the horses get a free transfer too?

Hm, interesting. It still seems like it would be more economical than golf teams, but who knows

We used to be next door neighbors of the president of Tiffin and in fact his son was my babysitter.

At the time it was one of those "nothing" liberal arts NAIA schools with an old main and a library exclusively drawing students from the immediate area. I used to go to their basketball camp every summer which was probably the best program the school offered.

They moved up to DII and transformed into corporate/revenue centric place, built a bunch of new buildings and tried to host conferences. Having DII sports of course is a way to attract students/attention. Like a lot of colleges which pimped themselves out this way they still are a lower tier private without too much real respect.

This was probably going to happen anyway.

Quote:The program’s head coach Lukas Jachno resigned last Thursday after being named the GMAC/MEC Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season. The decision was described to members of the team as a ‘forced resignation.’ At that time, the athletes were told that the Athletics Director Lonny Allen did ‘not have any intentions to cut the team.’

The diving coach informed the athletes of the decision to cut the program.

Tiffin sponsors 23 other varsity athletics programs. The school says that it will continue to honor scholarships for current athletes if they choose to continue at Tiffin.

The program was only added in the 2013-2014 season, and while they had success with top-end swimmers, they struggled to fill out their roster in 7 seasons. This was evident in 2020 when the Tiffin men’s program, which has 16 athletes on their roster, was unable to meet NCAA Division II eligibility requirements for selection consideration at the NCAA Championships. Division II rules require programs to take 11 swimmers of a gender to at least 8 bona fide collegiate competitions in a season to be eligible for post-season competition.

It's expensive flying athletes all over the country for sports events but have you ever seen the price of an airline ticket for a horse??!

I went to a customer site in Tiffin, OH a few years ago. Driving by the school, that was my impression, too. I know Tiffin shares a football stadium elsewhere in town with the public high school and (I think) the Catholic high school. Heidelberg (D-III) is across town, and appeared to me to be a lot more higher-end. I could be wrong.

No you are correct. Heidelberg was thought of as more of a mid tier private.

I have a coworker that went to Heidelberg and I dated a girl that played soccer at Tiffin. Small world!
