RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
drops Robert Morris to only 5 men's sports. Will need that Central Michigan/Wright State waiver, but they can't just chill with 5 forever.

Moon Township, Pa. – Robert Morris University announced today it will no longer field NCAA Division I men's and women's ice hockey teams as part of a series of strategic initiatives intended to position the university to be amongst the most agile and professionally focused schools in the nation as it prepares for its upcoming 100th anniversary.

In reading this release and the FAQs it's clear to me that they have no idea that they are not compliant with D1 policy. They also keep saying they have 15 sports when there are only 14 non-hockey sports listed. Now; unless they are adding a men's sport but it has not been announced yet, you can disregard my comments. This reminds me of when Chicago State first started talking about dropping baseball.

Central Michigan adding men's golf for 2022-23 as their waiver for not having 6 men's sports was set to expire.
With CMU returned to compliance, Wright State is certainly on the clock.

I see 6-basketball, soccer, lacrosse, golf, cross country and football. I would think they would have been better off dropping football. And with no men's track, cross country has no chance to be competitive.

They have a football stadium, they do not have a hockey rink.

2013 - 2nd NEC Championships, last time they had a men's team. Cross country is not expensive at all. I coach a team and out total budget is under 15k. Granted we do not have scholarships, so that helps. But RMU can use cross country to stay in compliance and have 10 more people on campus than normal, that is a win. Plus endurance athletes generally have high GPA's, which is a PR win for the school. Generally endurance athletes do not cause to many issues around campus, so no negative PR either. The same coach for the men's and women's team.
Their races are as follows - two that they host. So expenses include timing company and rental of facilities (?). One race in Bethlehem, PA and one in Buffalo. So two overnight trips with maybe 20 total. Conference championship in in IN, so maybe two nights for that one, then the Mid-Atlantic regionals are in PA, so a night or two three. That is it. Yes food does add up, but 10 more students on campus outweighs those costs.

I missed the announcement made in October 2020 that men's cross country was returning to RMU for the 2021 season. At the time of my previous post in May, that sport was not included on the menu of men's sports. Since I was not aware of the full story, just disregard all comments in that post. My error.

If you don't have track also, you aren't going to get good cross-country runners.

That's the truth. I get why schools do it, but I still think its a dumb move. Mens volleyball would be a better spectator sport than cross country and also low cost and requirements. But honestly, the fact that it's a fight to keep even a low number of sports is sad. They should run things smarter, because tons of NAIA privates have 30 plus teams and do so at a profit.

And getting into the EIVA after a few years shouldn't be an issue

Wright State's clock has very little time left.
https://wsuguardian.com/decision-time-ws...nning-out/
If they were looking to add fall or winter sports, I would say the clock has run out. They need to decide what spring sports they are going to add and get coaches hired before the calendar flips to 2022.
For a moment I felt Wright State would be a good add for the D2 Great Lakes Valley Conference. Then I remembered that the GLVC requires all members to have softball.
