Your ideal "schedule"? Best 12 game build for your team?
We usually get too wrapped up in "conference" members, forgetting that teams can and do play opponents outside their conference more often than those inside. What would be the ideal schedule for your team? Try not to specify teams unless they are annual opponents.

Team: Florida
Annual: Georgia and Florida State
Remainder: no more than 4 road trips outside Florida, 1 or 0 outside the Southeast (LA to VA)
Competition: against the premier 7-12 Southeast teams, whose champion (or 1-loss 2nd place team) advances to a Regional Quarterfinal

Team: UCF (brother's team)
Annual: USF
Remainder: 1H & 1A against other premier in-state schools, 1H & 1A against nationally prominent programs, remainder are home-and-home series against peer institutions in the ETZ & CTZ; at least 6 home games
Competition: Undefeated 12-game season yields entrance into Playoff Quarterfinal

RE: Your ideal "schedule"? Best 12 game build for your team?
When it comes to building the ideal schedule or conference to my alma mater Cincinnati, I am Red from Shawshank Redemption:

College Sports : University of Cincinnati, your files say you've served 40 years of a life sentence. Do you feel you're worthy of playing at the highest level?

Red : Highest level? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means.

College Sports : Well, it means that you should be playing with the best programs

Red : I know what you think it means, sonny. To me, it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for not investing in sports during the leather helmet era?

College Sports : Well, are you?

Red : There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, because you think I should. I look back on the way we were then: a young, stupid university who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to them. I want to try to talk some sense to them, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That university's long gone, and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Highest level? It's just a bullshyte word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shyte.

In other words, I am done dreaming about an ideal schedule or conference for UC. Just line em up and play them.

For Vanderbilt football ... no games against foes of schools located west of the Mississippi River and no games against SEC teams. Six contests in Nashville and six on the road, with Notre Dame annually visiting Music City. (In this hypothetical, the Commodores would not play any of the other athletic programs I root for.):

Georgia Tech
Virginia
Duke
Wake Forest
Notre Dame
Northwestern
Pitt
Boston College
Syracuse
UConn
Maryland
Miami

Penn State:

In odd numbered years, PSU has to play five Big Ten road games so they "have" to play three non conference home games. Penn State says they want to schedule better for the purposes of the playoff but I haven't really seen many cases of scheduling up get teams in the playoff. I'd want to play Pittsburgh every year but that would mean they'd have to play even years at Pittsburgh and eliminate any other Penn State non conference road trips. I'd also like to see Penn State play games in Philly. Maybe they would alternate home and homes with Pitt and Temple. I'd also like the occasional home and home with Syracuse and maybe Alabama (they played some games in the 80's). Playing one of the big Florida teams would be nice too.

RE: Your ideal "schedule"? Best 12 game build for your team?
Under the current System for Auburn:

1. Georgia Tech (OOC P game)
2. Arkansas (Division)
3. Mississippi (Division)
4. Southern Miss (OOC G5 & always a good game)
5. Tennessee, South Carolina, Missouri, Florida, Vanderbilt or Kentucky (Rotating East Division game)
6. L.S.U. (Division)
7. Mississippi State (Division)
8. U.A.B. or Troy (OOC G5 game for Homecoming and let's keep the funds in state)
9. Texas A&M (Division)
10. Duke, Wake Forest, Kansas, Purdue, Indiana etc. (A week OOC P game)
11. Georgia (East Division game)
12. Alabama (Division)

Now if we move to an all P game format with a breakaway or just for additional revenue then something like this would be better:

P. UAB, Troy, or South Alabama for a preseason game replacing the Spring game and representing the 7th home game in the ticket book every year.
1. Duke, Kansas, Wake Forest, Purdue, Indiana, Maryland, or Rutgers (Weak tune up against a P school)
2. Arkansas
3. Mississippi
4. Georgia Tech
5. Rotating East Division Team
6. Rotating Decent Big 12 school or another rotating East Division school
7. L.S.U.
8. Texas A&M
9. Mississippi State
10. Rotating Decent ACC school or another rotating East Division school
11. Georgia
12. Alabama

Pitt would love to play Penn St annually.

The Ohio St fan in me likes what we have going on now:

6 Big Ten East opponents
3 Big Ten West opponents (with at least one being Neb/Iowa/Wisc)
1 OOC Blue blood
1 run of the the mill P5 or strong G5
1 MAC school

For Kansas State give me the following

12 schools to play every year:

(Regional)
Kansas, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Texas Tech, Arkansas, West Virginia, Iowa

(Nostalgia)
North Texas: Snyder's first win at K-State
Cincinnati: winnable non con P6
USC: big name but cats are 2-0 vs the men of Troy

Missouri: long time rivals
Kansas: main rival
Iowa State: most competitive rival
Colorado: old big 8/12 foe; some good games in the 90s and early 00s
Oklahoma State: most big 12 games have been competitive
Oklahoma: always fun to beat them
Texas: Bishop>Williams
Nebraska: 98,00,02,03 were nice
West Virginia: has sorta replaced Missouri for feelings/competition

For Cincinnati, pie in the sky, but:

1. Ohio State
2. Louisville (old rivalry)
3. Indiana
4. Kentucky
5. Virginia Tech
6. West Virginia
7. Notre Dame
8. Pitt
9. Penn State
10. Syracuse
11. Michigan or Michigan State
12. Miami University (oldest college football rivalry west of the Alleghenies)

All within an easy day's drive for away games.

Basically our current schedule but without A&M as an annual opponent and more rotation with the West instead

University of Toledo

Never the Nuts in CBus since the B1G officials will not allow a road team to upset the Nut Cart

Home game vs FCS school to get depth guys game experience.

Home and Home series with other G5 preferably in same time zone or a nice road trip for fans

Home and home or 2-1 with lower level P5 or strong independent

Regional buy game for nice road trip for fans and the bank account.

MAC games. Actually play Miami University in conference since it’s been better than ten years

Annual game with BGSUCKS

Real rotation of MAC East opponents

MAC west opponents

As an FSU fan I’d like to see the ACC scrap divisions and move to a 3+5 conference game model. My two ideal schedules under this format would be:

Sample 1
Army
@USC
NCST
@Miami
@Duke
Clemson
@GT
Virginia
@Wake
Boston College
North Dakota State
Florida

Sample 2
Fresno State
USC
@Pittsburgh
Louisville
@Virginia Tech
@Syracuse
Miami
North Carolina
Georgia Tech
@Clemson
Appalachian State
@Florida

Proximity and/or shared history with most opponents, and every 4-6 years, go for a premier, national program (2-1) or non-premier program (H-H) (define "premier" however you want).

UCF:

6 home, 6 away (as it should be for all D-1 teams. And no neutral site regular season games. CFB is best when it's played on campus. Neutral site is for bowl games).

1) FIU/FAU (alternate series H-H)

2) USM/UAB/Marshall/Ga. Southern (rotate H-H) (replaces current FCS opponents)

3) Two of the following regional opponents (H-H): GT/SCAR/NC State/Louisville (other possible candidates: Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss. State, UNC, Va. Tech, UVA, Vanderbit).

Every four or six years, replace standard OOC opponent with a 2-1 series with premier program outside the Southeast: ex. ND, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, OU, USC, etc.
Or, H-H with non-regional, "non-premier" program (ex. Arizona State, Cal, Okla. State, Purdue, BC, etc.).

Any series with UF, FSU, or Miami must be H-H (whether they are considered "premier" or not).
