I'd like to see him against some bigger bodies in that highlight clip to see if he can actually box out. Didn't look like it on a couple of rebounds. Just outjumping smaller guys

I find that kind of negativity aimed at JMU hilarious. For starters, the critics are now comparing JMU’s recruiting efforts to historically top-tier MBB programs. Just think about that. JMU’s recruiting success is now making people attempt to dismiss JMU’s success by poo-pooing 2 3-star players as not worthy of consideration. Still, it indicates an awareness that JMU’s MBB recruiting success is on the rise. It also suggests that in this era of the transfer portal and “one and done players” the critics are blindly ignorant to the potential development and impact of 3-star players playing multiple years within a single program.
I’d also ask how many consensus 5-star High School players exist and are available to sign in a single recruiting cycle? While it would be great to sign an entire class of recruits ranked as 5 and 4-star players, even the so-called “Blue Bloods” don’t sign classes consisting of those type of players.
3-star players are not chopped liver, and yet the proof of any player’s true ability at the high D1 level will be determined on the court. The critics of JMU’s recruiting success can go talk among themselves. JMU’s MBB is on the rise, and Coach By’s efforts to improve the level of MBB talent is undeniable.
It's an astonishing development, to be honest. Think where this program was a few short years ago. Rather than looking at the top 30 ranking, I prefer to look at the two players that committed with respect to their national ranking for their positions. Believe that 247 has the point guard at 22 at his position nationally; while ESPN has the just-committed forward Smith as the no. 35 power forward nationally and as a 4 star recruit. To answer your question, there are typically around 25 5 stars and maybe 100 4 stars in basketball. JMU also got Quincy Allen over the summer too, a former top 100 recruit in some circles. Byington had said we hadn't seen the full impact of the new arena in recruiting and I think we're seeing that now.

I agree that the blue-bloods get the attention, but I was pleased to see in the tweet above that with two three-star commits, we are ranked higher than Alabama with its lone five-star commit. Six is greater than five, after all.
Also, what do they consider a kid who ranks different stars from different sources, like Micah who is a four-star ESPN player, but a three-star by the other sources?
I'm especially stoked about Micah. He is going to be a star at JMU and in the Belt. If he fills out a little more, he is going to be incredible, not to mention if he grows an inch or two as Edwards has apparently done.

Byington just earned himself a great recruiting pitch.
Also Carey held his own as a freshman playing his first college game in that environment.

Why did JMU MBB just announce the signing an hour ago? Did he fully commit today beyond a verbal?

Yes.
The official national signing day began yesterday. As such, I’m assuming he just signed the official paperwork allowing JMU to make the announcement.

Don't get too hung on up weights from sites like 247. That might have been from when he was a freshman or sophomore and never been changed. The kid is lean, but very strong. His high school posted some videos from the weight room the other day and Micah was just tearing up the power clean.

Kind of interesting. If you look at the 247 site. 3 of JMUs top 5 recruits all time includes Micha, Redd, and Terrence Edwards. 4 of 10, would include Amadi.
At minimum, it would appear were getting a higher level of recruits.

RE: MBB Recruiting
As has been mentioned in another thread, Justin Taylor, a starter for Syracuse for the past 2 years, has entered the portal, and JMU has been in contact.
Taylor’s a Virginian, and his mom played for JMU. He’s 6’6” and was a 4 star recruit out of Highschool projected as a shooting guard.
Syracuse, because of a rash of injuries, has been playing Taylor as a forward. He would be a great addition and a replacement for Edwards. Taylor has 2 years of eligibility.
There’s also a starting 5’11” PG for Michigan who has entered the portal. Dug McDaniel is originally from the DMV, and averaged 17.8 points, 5.1 assists and 4.1 tebounds in 2024. Apparently he had some academic issues that resulted in him being limited to home games during a 6 game “suspension” however, the bigger issue for McDaniel is he wants to leave Michigan now that HC Juwann Howard was fired. McDaniel would be an upgrade for the graduating Green at PG. McDaniel will have 2 years of eligibility wherever he lands, with Georgetown and Maryland projected possibilities.

Isn't McDaniel the one that came out and said 200K or 300K was his price?

I haven’t heard that, but I’m sure all these guys are looking for $$$. Surprised many just don’t declare for the NBA draft.

Excited to start hearing about new additions
Heard this on the radio this morning.
5,000 Division 1 Men's basketball players last year.
1,000 graduated leaving 4,000 returning.
Of that 4,000 returning player, 2,500 entered the portal.
63% of returning players entered the portal.
