Before the split in '78, who was the last team from what is now FCS to be ranked? (AP if it matters)

Dartmouth, Richmond, and Yale were also ranked at some point in the 1970's. For some reason, Yale was the only team that's not in the current FBS that was ranked at any point between 1958 and 1971.

I don't know if Colgate in 1977 and Dartmouth, Richmond, and Yale in the 1970s says the polls were already favoring certain schools and conferences or if that was taken into some consideration when the split occurred.

I would say that Youngstown State or Appalachian State.

NDSU and '07 Appalachian St were both very close. Probably the 27-28 range.

In September 2016, North Dakota State was tied with UCLA in having the second-most points in the AP poll without being ranked (in essence, tied for 27th). I think that's as close as an FCS school has gotten to getting in.

Keep in mind that FCS schools weren't even eligible for the AP poll until 2007, when Appalachian State's win at No. 5 Michigan and the resultant demand opened the door.

Also, I believe based on wasting time at work looking on Wikipedia that George Washington, which was No. 17 in the final 1956 NCAA University Division poll with a record of 7-1-1, is the last school to be ranked in the highest football classification that no longer offers intercollegiate football.

Dartmouth was #14 in the final AP poll in 1970.
