Who benefits when sports shut down?
It's an honest question.

Who benefits when churches and other places of religious worship remain closed, but grocery stores, Wal-Mart and Target have never been shut down and it's impossible to social distance in their aisles?

No one benefits regardless what side of the argument you fall on.

Writers and media personalities that said any sports this year would be impossible, who could get to throw "I TOLD YOU SO" in the face of anyone who tries to argue against them. There have been many rooting for sports to shut down, not because it might be what they truly want, but because they want to be validated and proven as right.

The exact same thing can be said for folks on the other side of the issue.

The people who do not like sports, particularly college football. We have a sports columnist here who had been writing for the Cincinnati Enquirer for 30 years- he despises sports with the exception of golf. He spends half his time writing personal interest stories.

The NFL is about to cash in big on cancellation of CFB as well. No college football and you will see some more games moved to Saturday. And the NFL knows football lovers who watch more CFB will want to get their football fix on and will turn into their product.

Not to get into the weeds on this one but it is interesting that the people that tend to make the argument for shutting down the season & sometimes go to the extreme of "so you're ok with players dying" have no issue with the elderly (high risk category) lady working the cash register at the grocery store.

If the AAC plays this year they will prosper. Being an ESPN product they will get more TV slots. Should yield more money. A chance to show the country they belong with the P5.

Lets stir this back to the sports at hand. The athletes who have been injured. They now can have the extra time to make sure that they are completely at 100% compacity. Athletes want to get back on the field way too soon because they do not know any better, and that some coaches want them in to play. Having them more time to heal, and other players to heal would have players more active when they come back from a longer break, and that they would not play sloppy games.

I can see that but will they get what they want?
If your a G5 fan it could result in a FBS split or bigger divide.
Or it could lead to a more sensible D1 set up.
Having less sports or having two categories non revenue and revue.
Say an FBS school has to sponsor two fully funded revenue sports per gender regardless of the number of athletes.
Then those schools have to sponsor four non revenue sports each with an equal number of athletes. Basically title nine applies to non revenue equal sports. A cross country athlete should not count the same as a basketball player. Anyway I could see that going either way.

The unknown is always been the problem. Say five percent of these stud athletes end up with long term problems. The young healthy baseball pitcher suffering from fatigue and possible heart damage never got that sick.

Anarchists benefit.

Seriously.

Half the reason for this summer's riots is that people have been bored out of their minds for months. Attacking a line of cops adds some excitement to their Tuesday evening.

Our country is deeply divided. Half the country is against just about everything in one way or another anyway.
It doesn’t matter how things finally work out. Half the country is not going to be happy. I’m good with that.

Let’s see:

Main Stream Media—more panic = higher ratings = greater ability to assert influence on the public

Big Business

The Pharmaceutical Industry

Labor Unions

The Unelected Bureaucrats who suddenly have all this power due the panic

Sports are a form of entertainment. If one form of entertainment shuts down, people will seek out another form of entertainment.

Streaming services are a big winner right now.

This ***

The lack of live sports has allowed me to watch Netflix and a bunch of well reputed series (Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Ozark, When they see us, etc.).

Pretty spot on. However, imo the Big winner is Pharma. They went from being demonized for the opiod crisis and having billion dollar lawsuits to now the government is giving them billions of dollars to find a vaccine.
