RE: ****W1: HBU @ North Texas, 6:30 Central, Sat., ESPN3****
Just back from the game. The crowd was good, but not into the game. Fans shouldn't have to get loud and motivate their team against an FCS program. I predicted North Texas to be a 3-5 team in C-USA, and a 4-7 team overall. Despite the record setting offensive night, I saw nothing that changes my assessment (although, USM's performance against USA gives me hope of an additional Mean Green win). In short, UNT has serious issues on defense and the o-line.

Here are some specific observations..

1. Bowen's defense needs to get a lot better. Bowen's system gave up 568 yards of offense and 31 points to an FCS team tonight. Very bad.

2. Bowen's defense didn't record a "three-and-out" until half way through the 3rd quarter. And this was against FCS talent. Very bad.

3. Our offensive line was descent in pass blocking, but still bad at run blocking. This was also against FCS talent. Very bad.

4. Adaway looks like the real deal (5 carries/ 118 yards/ 2TD's), especially since the o-line wasn't really blocking well. Very good.

5. Bean looked better at QB than Aune. Possibly good.

Most were spaced apart and pretending to eat or drink so they wouldn't have to wear their mask. The cheerleaders and dancers were in the corner of the stands between the Wing Zone and student section. No one liked watching other fans sitting in their usual seats. It was like a stranger plopping down in your recliner and grabbing the remote. The North Texas chant doesn't work with 7,000 fans.

Regarding the post-COVID fan experience... Since fans were physically spaced apart more, do you feel that significantly contributed to the crowd not being into the game or was it due to other factors?

Was seating "specifically assigned reserved seating" or "general admission within a section" (ie sit where you want as long as it is within section x)?

Was the stadium rule that the only time you can take off your mask is to eat/drink? Tech's stated policy is that once in your seat you have the OPTION to wear the mask or not, but it is encouraged.

Was there any observed COVID drama from fans trying to force other fans to wear their mask, not cheer for the team, etc because "you are potentially compromising my health"?

Any other notable COVID changes vs the normal past experience?

In our case, I think the crowd wasn't into it because our performance was too similar to how we started last season.
2020: HBU 31 UNT 57
2019: ACU31 UNT 51

Seats were assigned to season ticket holders based on Mean Green priority points.

You were supposed to keep your mask on unless you were drinking and eating. So, everyone kept a drink or food near by.

This is Texas. No one acted like a Yankee. People that worried about their health probably stayed home and watched it on ESPN3.

No, but it is similar to last season, and both against FCS programs...

Congrats on the win. Thank you for the tape since we play HBU in two weeks. UNT defense needs some work, but it’s the first game of the season so don’t be so down on them yet.

We were running vanilla offense and defense in this game, but HBU has a good passing game. LT will handle them, but if you give their QB time he will find an open receiver. LT should be able to pressure him and keep him from posting big passing numbers, like he did against us.

HBU's defense is small but feisty. They stopped our run game for most of the first half, but our o-line isn't very good. LT will torch HBU's secondary.

You can watch the whole replay on ESPN+.

Yeah, I watched the game. The HBU QB is pretty good. His receivers dropped a few
passes that could have kept some drives alive a little longer. Just didn't have enough talent overall to hang with a team like UNT. That new UNT RB Adaway roughed up HBU's defense too.

I’m hopeful that we will have our legs under us after playing in the Baylor Game. You certainly ant sleep on HBU.

Adaway might be something special. He reminds me of a bigger, stronger Jeffrey Wilson, who is now in the San Fransisco backfield. Adaway runs angry. He was the 11th ranked player in Arkansas. Still don't know why more programs didn't recruit him.

Adaway was a true freshman in 2019 and only had 4 carries in our game against UTEP. But, he he managed to rush for 42 yards in that game, and average 10.5 yards a carry. Last night against HBU he averaged 23.6 yards per carry, with 2 TD's on just 5 carries. I can't wait to see how he responds to better competition. I hope he gets some serious carries against SMU in two weeks.

Might be your only win this season. Porous secondary. 39 of 62 for 480 yards and 3 TDS. Is their qb that good or is your secondary that bad?

True - and let me beat Joe to the punch - NTX only needs to win one more to beat our total from last year. But, in the words of our great U.S. general, “we shall return.” We have a new coach who has already dramatically improved our recruiting.

That maybe true, but HBU has a good QB and a feisty defense that played against a team with limited quality practice time. HBU has a limited schedule with plenty of time to game plan against UNT and Us. UNT will be fine but eviscerating their team that beat another by 20 points is silly.

Kudos to HBU, the fcs team who lit up NTX’s secondary. NTX’s next opponent is formidable and a rival. My money is on SMU winning by at least two touchdowns. I would predict winning by at least three touchdowns, but I’m sure NTX’s pride playing at home will keep the game close. Let’s revisit this conversation after the game.

Well it is one more win than ODU gets this year. Just saying.

Did you watch the Texas State game? SMU didn’t exactly destroy their competition. Rival games bring out the best in teams. Positivity is a welcome attribute this early in the season.

Might be your only win this season. Porous secondary. 39 of 62 for 480 yards and 3 TDS. Is their qb that good or is your secondary that bad?

North Texas is about like we were last season, but that still isn't as bad as ODU.

Good luck with the rest of your season too.
