they've gone like four or five straight years with their first round pick not making it thru a season or not even playing

Price pretty clearly qualifies as a miss at this point for a 1st rounder but I think your analysis is a bit harsh and revisionist. C was clearly a position of need and their top guy, Ragnow, somewhat surprisingly went in the pick just before them at #20. But the consensus on Price by draft day was more like borderline 1st rounder.

At #21, you definitely want more than we got. It comes with the territory in the NFL, but his injuries haven't done him any favors. Still he's been in the league for 3 years now and (despite some awful grades from PFF) I'd be willing to bet he lasts at least this year as well, quite possibly as a starter for the Giants. They must have seen some stuff they liked from him late last year and this preseason. In the end, he yielded us a potentially starting-caliber DT picked in R3 of the same draft (who has gotten some very solid grades from PFF) in return plus a possible draft pick.

Bad pick for sure that feels magnified since it was only 3 years after the disastrous 2015 draft of Ced and Fisher in R1 and R2. But it was not a rogue stupid gamble at the time.and doesn't really hold up as a monumental bust imo.

From what I've read, Hill is a pretty decent player but was part of a deep and talented DL with the NYG. Not that I would expect a HC to bad mouth a player he just traded, but this sounds pretty sincere especially when talking about a moderately young guy (26):

Quote:“I have a lot of respect for B.J. [Hill] as a player, I think he’s a starting defensive lineman in this league,” Giants head coach Joe Judge said about the trade. “He’s in a unique position in the room he’s in. He’s in the last year of his contract, and I think this is an opportunity to improve our team but also put a player we have a lot of respect for to go out there and be in position to get starter money. So it’s something I think that works out for both parties very well. We appreciate what B.J. did.”

Yeah it does feel like a curse at times. To that point, the guy who was standing out most in this year's draft class (kicker aside) was definitely 3rd rounder Ossai. Ossai of course got hurt last week, had surgery and will likely be out for the year in case you missed it.

Hopefully Chase's preseason dropsies were just a blip of rust that will be forgotten soon after the regular season starts.

None of the Bengals 1st-rounders between 2014 and ’18 remain on the team. Were they all busts? WJ3 was pretty good, and Dennard was okay. But none valuable enough to extend.

Meanwhile how is Penei Sewell doing in Detroit so far?

Quote:It’s not so much that Detroit used seventh overall pick to take the Oregon offensive tackle. It’s that they immediately moved him from left tackle to right tackle. Switching from left tackle to right tackle would be enough of a challenge if not for the issues Sewell has shown in the preseason with playing high and not getting depth in his pass set. Sewell allowed 1 sack, 4 pressures and was beaten by his defender 3 times in 47 pass blocking snaps. This gave him the 6th worst PFF pass blocking grade out of all OTs in the preseason (over 20 pass blocking snaps).

I assume Penei (and Chase for that matter) is going to come around but I think a lot of us may have underestimated the effect of a year off had. Carman doesn't have that same excuse, but I heard that PFF rated him pretty good in the final preseason game. And for all the hand-wringing we do about the Bengals OL, it's interesting that they gave up a total of 1 QB sack this entire preseason (Pollack effect?).

It all starts for real now...

If grades are close I definitely wouldn't favored kids who played last year vs opt outs. Especially in Sewell's case who was young for his class to lose a year of development at OL is a difficult proposition. If he's a quality starter by the end of the year that's a win.

I view Chase a little differently because WR is a bit more of a plug and play type position.

So I guess Flying Brian Pillman's son has joined the new wrestling scene. I don't know what else the heck is going on here, but I got a kick out of it anyway:
