LEGENDARY COACH (and founding father of FAU football) HOWARD SCHNELLENBERGER HAS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 87

Howard Schnellenberger certainly SHOCKED the football world back in 1983 when his Miami Hurricane's --led by future NFL QB Bernie Kosar-- defeated the #1 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl to win the national championship. RIP, HS.

I will ignore the previous post and say R.I.P. to coach. What a character he was--- in a good way. Helped to build THREE excellent football stadiums. Not to mention all his other achievements. A great motivator and visionary!!!!

Now, let me be very clear: I LOATHE the Hurricanes. It wouldn’t hurt me one bit if their program got shut down. That being said, in the 30 for 30 “The U”, I loved how he recruited a player. He went to his house and visited the recruit and his family and when he left, he “forgot” his pipe (one of many I would bet) at the recruit’s house.

I guess it would’ve been kinda funny for that to backfire on him if the recruit committed to FSU and realized how popular Schnellenberger was and decided to keep it as a souvenir. Lol

I can not stand the Hurricanes either, being that I was an FSU fan before we started our own program (by Howard, of all people, oh irony)

RE: R.I.P. Howard Schnellenberger (March 16 1934 - March 27 2021)
My favorite Schnellengberger story from an old article detailing some unique and strange games between Southern Miss and Louisville. He was one of those coaches that you just loved watching your team beat...

'The Moon Over Hattiesburg' - September 29, 1990 at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Miss.

In one of the weirdest games in the series, the Golden Eagles scored 22 points in the game's first 5:51 while running just two plays from scrimmage. Tony Smith returned a Cardinal punt 45-yards for a touchdown barely a minute into the game, and the Eagles added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 advantage. Running back Roland Johnson rumbled 47 yards for a touchdown on the Golden Eagles' second offensive snap of the night, and then safety Kerry Valrie scooped up a Louisville fumble and returned the ball 42 yards for a touchdown to give Southern Miss the 22-point lead with just over nine minutes left in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles went on to win the game 25-13. After the game Louisville coach Howard Schnellenberger, who had been burned several times over the years by miraculous Golden Eagle plays, credited the USM win to the moon over Hattiesburg.

"It was a game of big plays," an elated Curley Hallman, head coach of the Golden Eagles shouted after the game. "I am very excited for our team, coaches and fans. This was an exciting game. Our crowd was really into the game." (End of story in article)

Louisville finished 9-1-1 that season and beat Bama in the Fiesta Bowl. Southern Miss also beat Bama that season as well as Auburn. That Golden Eagle team finished the regular season 8-3 with the 3 losses to Georgia (USM game winning field goal bounced off upright as time expired), Mississippi State and Va Tech by a combined 8 points. ...

You have to know the history to understand the sentiment. He hated USM and throughout his career that hate manifested in doing all he could to belittle our city and school. Many of the misunderstandings of our university have him as the foundation because what he said was given attention because of his past. Like I said in my original post, I’m not celebrating his death by any stretch. But I won’t shed a tear.

So up until Howard making disparaging remarks about USM and Hattiesburg everything was Kosher? It was after his comments that USM and Hattiesburg has been in a downward spiral and never recovered...as far as I can tell the last time Howard played USM was in either 1994 or 1995. I have to see some of his quotes that did this damage.

Coach is living rent free in your mind!!

Yeah, Dusky, let's just that there were some Schelly comments that the sports media ran with about USM and Hattiesburg that pretty much kneecapped us over and over in terms of public perception right at the time that the Metro Conference split itself up

Don't really have a frame of reference about the Southern Miss/ Schnellenberger controversy. On the other hand, from my point of view, what he did to elevate the programs at Miami and Louisville (not to mention FAU) was incredible. The man was truly a success at building football teams at institutions where the game was either non-existent or on life support. RIP, Coach.

When we were still 1-AA we beat them in 1987 at Louisville. Ol Howard blamed everyone but himself in the stadium for the loss LOL
