This one was easy, lots of Youston fans

Actually not as many Houston fans as you might expect (they were excited about the Big 12 but they're not sold on their coach either and had the week 1 loss to Texas Tech). I'd say it was about 50-50 - perhaps even a few more Rice fans than Houston.

Here's a photo of the crowd looking towards the Rice side right before kickoff. It got a bit bigger after that as the tailgaters wandered into their seats.

Regardless, we won't touch that crowd again this year after last night.

FIU has over 58K students, not sure why they cannot average more than 10K fans. They don't even average 2k fans, I have been there and seen it.
It is a cultural thing, the student body is more than 70% hispanic or hispanic descent, it has a large population of international students and they could care less about the football team. Miami has night life options, so it is hard to attend a game when you have better options. In addition, U-Miami is king down there and even people from FIU root for the 'Canes.
The day I went to a game between FAU and FIU and saw FIU students dancing merengue in the parking lot; that's when I knew their program would never take off.

That is true. FIU football is still like an infant compared to UM football. Most FIU alums are UM fans first. Almost every FIU alum I know is a UM fan.

FIU should drop football and go all in on Soccer.

That's actually pretty accurate.

I also got a huge laugh out of the rice attendance lol. If it was 26k, 25k was houston.

100 percent wrong. See my comment above.

50-50 crowd at best. It might not have been 26K in the stands but was low 20's for sure.

Very pleased with the USM number, given our poor first game and a bad FCS opponent. Hopefully more for the Troy game, but if we lose that one I'm not sure we'll see another good crowd this season. The admin really improved the pregame atmosphere though, so that might help.

Guess we will find out this week when we host ECU. Anything short of 30k will be a disappointment, but 35k should be what we are aiming for.

It's it's just covid man, I wouldn't sweat it. Everybody's going to have lower attendance numbers this year.

It's just what it is.

Was talking with a member of our athletic department and apparently the nationwide average in attendance decline this year so far has been about 20%. Not sure how valid that number is but it seems right based on the eye test.

Yeah, so I wouldn't chalk it up to anything but that. Also FCS.

We will see a much larger turnout this weekend for the ECU game.

Great question... probably a combination of an FCS opponent, covid, and the Come and Take It controversy. Interesting though, the student section showed up in full force.

If FIU has a band they weren't shown on the broadcast. Could never tell from the audio because you couldn't hear a thing from the stadium. No fan noise, no ref, nothing. The only audio was coming from the box and any outside noise that leaked in.

Any weekend Rice, the smallest school in the league, leads the conference in attendance is a sad commentary on the league.

I expect the number reflects tickets sold, not butts in seats.

TSU had 18,297 for their game with Prairie View A&M, so that game attendance might break 20,000, too.

Regardless of the announced number, unless the forecast improves we will be lucky to have 15K butts in seats this weekend...current forecast is 80% rain Thursday, 70% of Friday with 60% Saturday and 50% Sunday. Our only saving grace is that it's a 6:00 pm kickoff on Saturday so maybe/hopefully the rain will move out by or close to gametime.
