RE: Wanna fix this "totally awesome conference"?
This is a good thought but it won’t happen and really doesn’t matter. All signs point to us being out of CUSA in 2023. What’s left of CUSA can renegotiate a different contract that hopefully pays them more than what they are getting now.

RE: Wanna fix this "totally awesome conference"?
If CUSA would ditch FB experiment you have two good media partners.
Negotiate that
CBSSN gets Tier 1. Get both a Friday night game and Saturday game.
Stadium gets tier 2 - two Saturday games
Bally Sports RSNs (owned by Stadium) get tier 3
Might keep the same money but it would seem more like a real media deal without Facebook streams.
Four tier 1/2 TV games on TV every week. Plus everything else on Bally RSN

Marshall is leaving to either the AAC or the SBC. Present your idea to them when you get there.

CUSA members lost most of the relevant OOC games last year including losing all of its bowl match ups. That has to change if CUSA wants to matter to anyone.

Everyone always does when talking about ODU football, not sure why it should be different here.

There's nothing to present over there. If our games get selected in Tier 1/2 then then will be on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 etc......NOT FACEBOOK.

You know, I don't think Marshall has to wait if this is what is important to you. Just have your AD--well, the person sitting in the AD's empty office--reach out to the Sun Belt and request an invitation and get your party started. Bitching at us isn't going to accomplish anything.

RE: Wanna fix this "totally awesome conference"?
After reflecting on this, I will agree that there has to be some guaranteed minimum each school can count on for budgeting. Someone mentioned that in this thread. And also, there has to be an agreed-upon set of metrics to determine what % each school gets, above that guaranteed amount. The conference has contracts with media for broadcasting that nets $X in revenue, and beyond that there are other revenue sources related to the conference. For instance the basketball playoffs. Each school in the field of 68 gets an amount, then those who win a game, get a little more, and those that win twice and reach the Sweet 16, get more, etc...It's been awhile since a CUSA school advanced very far, but the lion's share should go to whatever school generated the $revenue.
In the TV contracts if some games gross more for CUSA than others, then the school(s) participating should get a bonus(es) because of it. But again, every school gets a certain minimum. Otherwise it would become a case of the rich getting richer and the struggling schools will have even more problems. If it's the ultimate intention to cut loose those struggling schools, then just do it. As a conference the "bottom feeders" should be advised they have maybe 2 years to find another home, or prepare to go indy, because at that time, you are history! Seems a bit draconian to me, but hey!

Yeah....let's not making any changes and actually try to make this conference better. That's the main reason I want to leave to be honest. Posts like this.

Posts from other posters on a message board makes you want your favorite University to leave an athletics conference?
If you don't like the posters or their comments you can always leave THIS BOARD on your own.
As for your University and CUSA, feel free to call your AD and University President to express your opinions to folks that can make your wishes actually come true.

I'm fine with everyone getting a minimum I guess. Not sure why that is necessary, but as long as there are bonuses for the most valuable programs then I'm fine with it.
And believe me, I'm just as frustrated with the leadership at Marshall for allowing this non-sense to go on for so long.

It is the most recent and glaring example. Wins and losses still count and perceptions still matter.

All sports and conferences revenue share. See who wants to come in and build. Now the A10 does let schools keep most of their NCAA MBB credits.

True, but you won't receive more conference distribution than ULM.

So....we would get much better exposure to off set that. It's got to be one or the other and currently CUSA doesn't offer the exposure, so it needs to off set that by offering more media revenue to those members.

Stop feeding the leeches and make them invest and perform or starve. And also payout based on demand. If tier 1/2 outlets request your team play on Facebook because you're more popular, then you get compensated for the loss of exposure. If you're taking one for the conference then the conference can pay you for it.
I'm not talking about giving anyone an advantage over the others. Start fresh and tally it up and payouts to be based on a scale of what your team did in the TWO major revenue sports that everyone here has to play, with bonuses for winning bowls, tournaments, reg season, national tournament, NY6 bowl participation, etc, etc. And schools selected by inverted higher tier, worse media bullsh!t get paid more, too. In other words if your school always falls to the 3rd tier if shown on media because no one requests to see your team, then you aren't worth what another school is that selected by our media partners to be featured.
Then schools that give the most back will not feel like they are doing it all for nothing while others sit back and collect a check for winning in field hockey. Something has to light a fire under the a$$ of the dead weight in this conference or compel them to find somewhere else to go. This right here is why some of us don't want to be here anymore and is the heart of the matter, really. I'm surprised LaTech isn't more sympathetic to this point of view as they always perform well in basketball and football and then have to fund UTEP's disastrous athletic program (for example). But their fans are some of the first to defend CUSA.
Don't care if done as conference on the whole or by division. I would have a whole ceremony announcing the top payouts and the biggest losers. Shame those mfers into not sucking. Encouragement isn't working, people.
Unfortunately the CUSA HQ aren't going to do anything that might require some extra work.
You have to work before you do extra work

(09-15-2021 11:01 AM)Nugget49er Wrote: Most G5 schools are going to go through cycles of success > lose good coach to bigger school > rebuild/not successful > hopefully success again. Are you suggesting that a school should get conference money, then lose it, then hope to get it again? As an AD, how would you budget for that? Half of the conference teams will always have a losing conference record. Are you suggesting that half the teams in the conference get no, or limited money? Is there any conference in the world where you think this idea would float? Do you think that Marshall would be able to recruit 8-10 other schools to join with them based on this kind of plan?
Half the conference will have a losing conference record but not necessarily a losing record. If they want to schedule 4 body bag games then they can make their money from that. Why should we subsidize their 0-4 start? There would be a base payout. ADs can budget for that and by keeping the best coaches and facilities they can get and winning.
Let's say the bottom team starts at 50% payout and they all move up from that. No one is going to want to stay at the bottom long. Right now there is NO incentive to do anything but collect a check. This was written with the knowledge that Marshall wouldn't be the top school in either sport much of the time, but that we always carry our weight and re-invest heavily to make sure we stay near the top. So other schools are not only collecting a check but they're not putting anything back into the budget to improve.
It's just a thought. It would really be to try to get ouur national perception back on track. If our worst team was winning 5 games a season trying to get out of the basement we wouldn't need to have this discussion. But we have the same guys pulling the same crap every year with the same tired coaches and ADs with no incentive to try anything else. It would be either that or we look at 5 years and cut the two worst teams loose for good. Composite ranking and RPI for instance. Total them and divide by two and the two worst say sayonara. That feeds everyone a little more dough who have been doing it right or making recognizable effort. If that's not enough we do it again and then have a lean 10 man conference worthy of inviting 2 good programs from other conferences. And we have the perception to back it up.
You guys are always saying what could Judy do or leadership sucks. Well that's one solution to get the conference back on track. Get money to the producers, weed out the stagnant. Raise our overall ranking in relation to peer schools/conferences. Maybe get a 2nd bid to the tourney.
And again to be clear, I'm not talking about making one team a Boise getting more money than the rest. I'm talking about earning it every year. I would love it if Marshall was the lowest paid team in the conference under those ideas. What a conference that would be to be a part of.
