It's a bit of a hike, but if you're healthy and the weather's nice. Mostly shuttles from campus.

Neither. It is owned by the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. UAB is paying roughly $40 million for being the primary tenant. The city, county, and BJCC all pitched in money as well. From what I have heard, UAB being the primary tenant means they have a say-so in any event that is held at the stadium and that they always have priority for anything they want to use it for.

It isn’t on campus, and UAB will likely never have one. The area around campus has become significantly more developed since the talks of an on campus stadium back several years ago and there really aren’t any viable locations on campus any more. However, it’s in the Uptown district with tons of attractions and will make for a unique and fun game day atmosphere that campus wouldn’t have provided, especially with the new Northside Park development replacing Carraway Hospital and the City Walk park going alongside the neighborhood. Also have heard that the entertainment district in uptown is going to expand with room for several more restaurants, bars, and hotels. The future of that area is exciting

Nice. Sounds like a great deal for UAB, getting that level of a facility while "only" having to pay $40 million. I knew you all had talked about an on campus stadium in the past and that's why I was wondering.

I'm happy for you guys. You deserve it. 04-cheers

No kidding. The city pitched in $90 million itself. Football would be long forgotten if it wasn’t for the city of Birmingham. All UAB fans should be incredibly glad that the city government is such a wonderful supporter of the Athletics programs. I think they also give $500,000 a year to the program as well. Helps being in a city with a budget of half a billion a year. Not shading any smaller college towns (all of these I’m listing are wonderful places), but if UAB was located in a small city like Huntington, Ruston, Troy, Southern Miss, Boone, Bowling Green, etc. then there probably wouldn’t be UAB football anymore

What you are overlooking in those cities the school already OWNED the stadiums and did not need the city to build one.

As for not having a program you dont think other schools went through problems like UAB? In 1992 or somewhere around there the Western BOR voted to do away with football and cut the budget to next to nothing....yet Western still has a football program and made it through that.

What you better hope is the UAB fans will support a few years of losing because all of this city investment doesnt really matter ...if they dont. They sure as hell wouldnt support it before the shutdown.

Other schools did go through this, I am aware. But they don’t have the literal *elephant* in the room pulling political strings 45 miles down the road. The BOT would have never approved any of this without the city bankrolling some of it. I highly doubt donors would have coughed up an additional $90 million. I was meaning a specific to UAB case. If UAB was an any city the size of those I listed in the state of Alabama, there wouldn’t be a chance. The BOT has always played games, like when UAB hired Jimbo Fisher and they blocked the hire. Or when donors were going to replace turf at Legion Field for free and the blocked. List goes on and on.

I was wondering the same thing but didn't want to ask anymore questions as it seemed a few of the UAB fans were sensitive for some reason.

You can, it’s about 1.5 miles away. All along city blocks with sidewalks and through business districts so it wouldn’t be a bad walk. Alabama weather might be the controlling factor there. I know they ran a free bus every 10 minutes from campus to Legion Field, I assume they probably will do that again. The city also operates a 25 cent transit line, Magic City Connector, from the campus area to the BJCC.

The free shuttles, for the general public and students, will run back and forth from the Hill Student Center to Protective Stadium.

Honestly, these questions has been asked many times, matter of fact every time a thread is started about Protective Stadium these questions are asked and answered. It's not being sensitive, it's just tiring to keep answering the same questions over and over again.

1. It's not on campus.
2. The stadium is less than two miles from campus.
3. UAB doesn't own it.
4. UAB ipays to be the primary tenant of the stadium.

The problem is Protective Stadium does not have enough threads. If you had 4 or 5 separate threads, the questions would be answered and whether it is true or not will become the assumed truth. I need to find a current realignment thread. Talk soon.

I went to all 3 hoops tournaments there. Always liked the area. Too bad we won’t play there but once
I will always miss legion having been there many times One of my fondest memories was my son being part of the training staff and being on the field of such a historical place

Mile and a half is nothing for most folks. If you go to any "big" schools for a game it seems like you walk all day to get from where you can park to where the game is. The main problem is motivating students to make that walk or hassle with a bus. Our stadium is 1 block from the dorms, with a winning program since before they were born and they still don't show up well, sometimes. Same for basketball.

Our students have been making the bus ride to Legion since the program started and this will be a similar ride. Hopefully they keep coming and maybe more 04-cheers

Part of why the UAB fans are testy about the subject is that this question and several similar and related questions have been answered in about 25 threads, both here and on the AAC board. We're kinda tired of people who don't have a clue acting like UAB does not *really* have a stadium, since it isn't on campus or owned by UAB. We've got a ten year lease as the primary tenant. There *is* no other tenant.

How many college teams play in municipal stadiums or pro stadiums in their city? This isn't a new invention.

The mile and half is no big deal because you could be walking further than on off campus stadium. I am happy that UAB is playing in a much nicer place. Hoping we can have another home and home with you guys being we both have upgraded facilities we play in now.

100%. This is a non-issue, in my opinion.
