Result of Current G5 Realignment - Three Equal Leagues
I think this tweet by Dodd sums up the G5 realignment perfectly:
I think the end result of all this will be three eastern based G5 leagues that will be about the same in football performance but with the AAC and CUSA made up with programs with better institutional profiles and higher potential than the SBC programs. This of course assumes that CUSA can survive this round of realignment without it’s members overreacting and jumping ship.
The AAC has lost it’s three clear best programs and just followed the approach in expanding that CUSA used during the last realignment. Now CUSA will have to respond by taking a couple top FCS programs (or Liberty) similar to what the SBC did last realignment with App St and Georgia Southern. It worked out well for the SBC and there is no reason to think that adding from the FCS or a school like Liberty won’t work as well for CUSA this time.
The difference between CUSA and the SBC is that the remaining CUSA members still include most of the programs the were selected over most of what the SBC during the last realignment. These schools were selected by the CUSA university presidents for a reason, mainly markets, institutional profile, and the potential that these programs have. This potential is still there and there really hasn’t been that much time since the last realignment to see it through. For the SBC, programs like Louisiana and Coastal are winning now with their current coaches but that doesn’t mean they will not revert back to how they were previously when Napier and Chadwell get hired away. And for the CUSA programs La Tech, Marshall, WKU, and even FIU, MTSU, and ODU have won before and can win again with the right coaches. As for the AAC, they really are no different with most of the programs that are left performing no better than how the CUSA and SBC have performed in recent years and their recent adds have performed no better.
As long as the CUSA programs just hold and not over react to the rumors I really believe they will come out no worse than the SBC and probably better in the long run.

There will, indeed, be “Three Equal Leagues” outside of the P5. Alphabetically, those 3 are:
1. AAC
2. MWC
3. SBC
Those 3 will battle each other for success, money, ratings, meaningful Bowl-bids against P5 opponents, etc.
The MAC, independents like UConn, and whatever UTEP and FIU choose to do, will be several rungs below the AAC/MWC/SBC.
