UALR is being asked to leave, they don't meet SBC by-laws, UTA also. ASUN is their best likely option, SLC and OVC are really their only others.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that. What bylaws do they not meet? Is it specifically the facility size requirements?
No, it's number of sports. UALR isn't in compliance, UTA is but they know they need to look elsewhere too. It's a resign or you'll be fired situation.

This is what some have thought the Big South would do with Presbyterian since they dropped scholarship football.

OT: But whatever happened to UNCAfans.com? I used to follow Winthrop, UNCA, and Big South basketball in the mid-2000s because there was a 7'7" player (Kenny George) from Chicago on UNCA. I also found Winthrop's dynasty super compelling, and recall some sellouts they had on ESPN2. I fondly remember Kenny George and UNCA looking primed to take down Winthrop's dynasty in 2008 - sweeping them in the regular season - but Winthrop kept their throne for one more year winning the Big South Final. IIRC, that offseason, Kenny George had part of his foot amputated and his career ended abruptly. Haven't heard anything about him since then.

Anyway, I would read UNCAfans.com back then to keep tabs on the Big South. Pretty active site and noticed it's no longer there.

I believe for the time being the 10 FBS conferences, the Atlantic 10, Big West, SWAC, Patriot, and Ivy will stay put for a while.

Here are my predictions for the basketball moves that will take place by 2023:

After losing Loyola to the A-10, the Missouri Valley is up. They select two schools: UIC (Chicago market) and Murray State (good mid-major basketball brand) to bring their total up to 12.

The Big East has been rumored to expand recently. Gonzaga has been mentioned but I believe geography will prove to be the deal-breaker. However, I do think the Big East and Gonzaga will strike a deal for the Zags to play four BE schools a year (two at home and two away). The Big East will be influenced by FOX and the fact they are now the smallest power basketball conference and expand by one school: St. Louis. The Bilikens are located in a market untouched by the Big East and do have a traditional basketball brand. It is not the most exciting pick but having 12 teams and the Gonzaga deal all but guarantees the league 6 bids a year.

As Gonzaga decides to stay put, they realize that is in their best interest to expand the WCC by one school and keep the 16-game schedule so that they can avoid playing the bottom few teams in the league twice. Their choice: Denver. The conference is now up to 10 schools.

The CAA is up. With departure of James Madison, the league decides to add three schools: Howard, Hampton, and Monmouth. The first two are HBCUs with football and the latter is a solid mid-major basketball brand. The conference is now up to 12 schools.

The SoCon has been quiet on the realignment front for a while but plays opportunist and grabs Winthrop (good mid-major basketball brand) to get to 11 schools.

The WAC is at 13 schools with the departures of NMSU and SHSU and the additions of Incarnate Word and Southern Utah. They add Houston Baptist to get to an even 14.

The Atlantic Sun is at 11 schools with the departures of Liberty and Jacksonville State and the addition of Austin Peay. They add Little Rock
to get the league back to 12 schools.

The MAAC looks around after losing Monmouth and decides to grab Wagner and Bryant to get to 12.

America East looks around and decides to stay at 9 following the departure of University of Hartford.

The NEC invites the University of New Haven (D2) following the departures of Wagner and Bryant to stay at 9.

The Horizon looks around and invites Western Illinois to get back to 12 schools following the departure of UIC.

The Big South decides to stay put at 10 following the departures of Winthrop and Hampton.

The big booms begin now. The Big Sky invites the Dakota 4 to join forming a 14-team league. NDSU, SDSU, UND, and USD accept.

At this point, things are getting desperate for the remaining teams. The MEAC invites Tennessee State and Chicago State following the departure of Howard to get to 9 schools.

The Southland invites UMKC and UT-Arlington to join Texas A&M Commerce following the departures of UIW and Houston Baptist to get the league up to 9 members.

The six remaining OVC members invite the remaining Summit members- St. Thomas, Oral Roberts, and Omaha- and Southern Indiana (D2) to replace the departing members-Murray State, Tennessee State, Austin Peay, and Belmont-to get to 10 members.

The Summit is no more. With Hartford dropping to Division 3 and Texas A&M Commerce, Southern Indiana, and New Haven moving up, Division 1 would have 360 schools.

I disagree on the Big South front, it's in Hampton's best interest to stay, especially if Norfolk State and NC Central move to the Big South. The CAA is not what it once was. Also Winthrop does not have the resources to leave as the fee is around $1mil. Also they don't have football, which the SoCon will want. No basis for the speculation. Winthrop's best fit is in the Big South.
SoCon is not big on football anymore, and hasn't been for awhile now. Even UTC has been de-emphasizing football for basketball, from what I have heard.

It would make more sense for Chattanooga to try and move up to the CUSA. If the SoCon were to focus primarily on basketball, I'd be looking to add UNCA and Winthrop, even though UNCA and WU don't have the resources many schools have. They're both quality programs in Men's and Women's basketball and bring a lot of name recognition. Nationally UNCA and Winthrop have significantly more name recognition then Wofford and Furman, shoot even UNCG. And UNCA has a good rivalry with both WCU and ETSU.

I'm from the Midwest and I have a ton of friends that know about both programs. UNCA is lucky because it has the cache and name recognition that comes with being in a popular travel destination that is the city of Asheville andthe Mountain city. I will say, Wofford, UNCG and Furman have gotten a lot more attention the last few years. ETSU and Chattanooga are definitely the programs in the SoCon with the most name recognition (and The Citadel).

Regardless, I still think no doubt that UNCA and Winthrop's best interest is to stay in the Big South - and they will. They're going to continue to lead the conference as basketball programs. Although Hampton, Campbell, Radford and Gardner-Webb have been good, and NC A&T is going to be on the rise with it's transfers getting ready to be eligible and the 4 star recruit eligible in December. Not to mention High Point with its new facility.

UMass might, although they've been struggling as it is in the A-10, and they might have trouble competing in the Big East. In addition, they might not be eager to let go of their traditional eastern rivalries in the A-10, while adding distant schools in the midwest. Their travel expenses would increase, and they would have a more difficult path to the post-season tournaments.

I wouldn't expect Temple to leave the AAC, which is a conference that their programs could flourish in through 2032.

The only thing that might cause them to consider leaving the American - - as long as their generous revenue stream remains intact - - would be if the MWC were to invite them to join as a FB-only member and the Big East for olympic sports. They would come out ahead by a million or so per year, and their basketball attendance would skyrocket.

However, if TUFB and TUMBB can get to the point of being AAC East Division leaders in their sports, Temple could position itself very nicely for the next round of P5 expansion, because it would fit perfectly into the upper-mid-atlantic gap in the ACC along the eastern seaboard.

Question: Would the Big East be interested in adding another large public university?

UMass would be an interesting add (the perfect combo with UConn) but I don't foresee it happening for multiple reasons.

Dayton's "problem" is its location (within close proximity to Xavier in Cincinnati). In all other respects — perfect.

Saint Louis checks all the boxes sufficiently — but is not a standout candidate in terms of results/attendance.

VCU would be an interesting addition. Massive school located in Richmond (near D.C. and Georgetown). No football. Dedicated basketball fan base. Nationally known and respected.

Duquesne (though a strong candidate in many ways) simply no longer has the hoops pedigree. But the Pittsburgh location, Catholic university profile, "cultural fit component" and long-term potential always have intrigued me. In some ways, Detroit Mercy is similar: would bring lots of positives and negatives.

I strongly feel each of the aforementioned universities would accept a Big East invite.

Of those you've listed, the most likely invitees might be St. Louis or Dayton, if one assumes that the Big East wants to go forward with 12 schools, for geographical reasons.

BE East Division: UConn, Georgetown, Providence, St. John's, SHU, & Villanova

BE West Division:

Butler (IN), Creighton (NB), DePaul(IL), Marquette (WI), Xavier (OH), & SLU (MO)/Dayton (OH)

Of these, St. Louis might have a better shot, since Xavier might try to block adding nearby Dayton (just an hour away from Cincy).

Saint Bonaventure has been flying high recently and would be a nice addition. However, the Big East might prefer to add a midwestern school to help cut travel costs for the other midwestern schools in the conference.

Detroit-Mercy is conveniently located in a large midwestern city, but they haven't had much bb success. If they were interested in adding a school from southern Michigan, they might consider Oakland, which is located in a prosperous suburb of Detroit on a scenic campus and has a good basketball program (#99 in the Massey Composite).

Schmolik - you missed the point of my question, and in addition, you overlooked the fact that it was "Erictelevision" and not I who asked the original question, when he wrote: "Would Umass or Temple be interested?" I answered his question with the follow-up question. It was between an exchange between him and me.

It's obvious that they added UConn, a large public university, but it's equally clear that UConn is a special case, since they have had a long history in the conference, with many long-term rivalries, and were considered one of the crown jewels of the old Big East.

The question that was posed above (with regard to UMass and Temple, specifically) is whether they would prefer to go after any large public schools that they haven't had an affiliation like that with before.

The Big East (basketball conference), much like the WCC, has long been portrayed as having little interest in having more than one large public university. However, they clearly have the right to change direction any time they see fit to do so.

It went down back this summer, I'm not sure what happened! It was just gone one day. It was really popular too. Bummer!

I forgot about Saint Bonaventure. But the school's rural setting and modest enrollment and endowment would likely eliminate it from Big East consideration. Still, that is a fine men's hoops program.

Chattanooga wants both money sports as strong. That is why they were hinting on moving in the future. The reason is that they want to play SEC schools in the future in football. It is getting to a point that FCS schools may not be able to play money games with P5 schools unless they move up to FBS.
