As the first black female Massachusetts U.S. attorney, Rollins is getting plenty of attention from the mainstream media. But readers in New England may remember Rollins as “Road Rage Rollins,” after a report surfaced last January that featured a woman accusing Rollins of presenting herself as a police officer in a mall parking lot and threatening to have her arrested — for what exactly, we don’t know.

Then, when a local news crew showed up near her house to ask her about that event, the District Attorney for Suffolk County, Massachusetts, went ballistic. Rollins swore at the crew and threatened to call the police with an “allegation” against the cameraman and producer.

The irony of all this is that Rollins is cut from the same cloth as so many other George Soros-backed district attorneys; Rollins doesn’t think she needs to enforce “low-level crimes” such as shoplifting.

WBUR succinctly explained why her recent nomination was so controversial, including quotes from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell:

The vote came Wednesday despite vocal opposition from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who urged his colleagues to deny Rollins’ nomination because of progressive policies she implemented as a district attorney. One of the hallmarks of her tenure in the role was not prosecuting some low-level crimes, in order to involve less people in the criminal justice system and divert resources to focus on serious crimes.

“This soft on crime advocacy should have earned the nominee a pink slip. Instead President Biden is giving her a promotion. I would urge all senators to vote no,” McConnell said. “Law abiding Americans don’t want prosecutors who refuse to prosecute. They don’t want city jails equipped with revolving doors and they need leaders who will defend the rule of law.”

Now, given that Rollins appears to be a prosecutor who does not prosecute, you may not expect her to make threats about getting law enforcement involved over minor matters.

But last January, Boston 25 spoke with Katie Lawson, who alleged that on Christmas Eve 2020, Rollins abused her power in a South Bay Mall parking lot.

Here are the details:

“She pulled her car about three inches from my car and said, ‘Do you want me to write you a ticket? Because I’ll write you a ticket,’ put on the sirens, put on the strobe lights for like, probably a couple of seconds,” the complainant told 25 Investigates.

According to Lawson’s complaint, Rollins told her: “Today is not the day to try me!”

“I 1,000% thought that she was a police officer because the only person I know that can write you a ticket is an actual a police officer. So she implied, in my opinion, she implied that she was a police officer. I thought she was a police officer. That’s why I called the police department,” Lawson said.

Now, all of this is the backstory to the real story — which is Rollins’ abuse of the press caught on camera and her blatant twisting of the truth about what occurred between her and the press.

Flagged Wednesday evening by Mike Saccone, Rollins was recorded yelling at Fox 25 employees for attempting to ask about whether or not the accusations against her were true. Rollins lashed out at the news crew for confronting her in front of her home, insinuating that as a “black woman,” they were going to put her life and her children in danger “with everything that is going on right now” in the country.

Before that video was released, on January 8, Rollins tweeted: “Earlier today a weird truck was in front of my house. When I walked out, a masked man got out of the car, mumbling something & quickly opened his trunk. He grabbed something large & dark & turned to me. I was terrified. My children were there. They were terrified. This is unreal.”

That description makes the event seem threatening. But the video made it clear that the only threatening person was Rollins, not the camera crew.

Then, on January 9, Rollins attempted to clarify the incident: “Yesterday’s incident in front of my house involved an unmarked media vehicle. Thank you for the acts of support. My children, like many of yours, are scared & worried about what they saw at our Capitol. Everyone is on edge, including myself. But my little girls & I are safe.”

But Boston 25 denied altogether Rollins’ characterization of the event. In fact, they even gave her the opportunity to go on the record to address it:

Following the encounter on that Friday night, investigative reporter Ted Daniel asked DA Rollins about that comment in an on-the-record phone conversation. She never addressed it. Instead, she repeatedly said that at the time she didn’t know who our news crew was and believed they were there to harm her. She reiterated that assertion in this tweet she posted moments after we made her spokesperson aware that our photographer had recorded the encounter.

The masked man DA Rollins referenced was a 25 Investigates photographer. The “something” he grabbed from the trunk of his news vehicle was a 25-pound television camera. He was indeed wearing a face mask, as required by the Governor’s order due to the pandemic.

Our crew never went to Rollins’ door and never planned to, and they didn’t see children anywhere near her. The crew never took video of Rollins’ home.

DA Rollins was the first to make the encounter public. She tweeted about it three times on Friday and once the next day.

For her part, according to Boston 25, Rollins confirmed that she confronted Lawson after media reported on the incident:

…DA Rollins went on The Howie Carr show in the evening and confirmed she did confront Lawson in the South Bay Mall parking lot while driving her official vehicle.

She told host Howie Carr: “I then hit a siren…. and her head snaps up and I say ‘Stop you are in the wrong row of traffic.’ I then go back to my life that is the extent of that encounter. Absolutely no truth to me putting blue lights on and flying around South Bay.”

The charges against Rollins filed by Lawson were ultimately dismissed.

Two sources close to the matter told the Boston Globe Thursday that Attorney General Maura Healey has launched a review into the Christmas Eve incident at Boston’s South Bay Shopping Center.

The other driver, Katie Lawson, told Boston police of the “very disturbing” standoff with Rollins as they both tried to exit the shopping center in the city’s Dorchester section.

“During this encounter I asked DA Rollins to ‘just go’ several times and she did not,” Lawson wrote in a complaint. “Apparently when she felt like she had done enough or said what she felt like, she then went right back to her [cellphone] call.”

Lawson told police she was trying to merge into traffic in front of Rollins’ black Chevy Tahoe when the district attorney rolled down her window and said: “You don’t want to try me today, lady, you really don’t.”

Rollins proceeded to move her car away from Lawson’s before the district attorney threatened to write the woman a ticket and put on her blue emergency lights and siren, Lawson told police.

Rollins then drove out of the parking lot after Lawson asked her fiancé to take a photo of the Tahoe’s license plate, the woman recalled. The SUV was issued to the district attorney’s office, the Globe reported.

A message seeking comment from Rollins’ office was not immediately returned early Friday, but she denied threatening Lawson or activating her emergency lights during an interview with a Boston radio station Saturday.

“I apparently spend my time patrolling the South Bay Mall with my lights and sirens on,” Rollins told Howie Carr. “Have you ever been? It is a haven for emotionally disturbed people and people with substance abuse disorder. I made the bad mistake of going to Stop & Shop that day.”

Lawson, meanwhile, said she believed Rollins was a cop during the alleged road-rage incident.
