RE: 1 Bowl in 4 years: Has Boise State used up all its mojo? G5 slide...
A side question is with 14 members in the AAC, is it at all likely they go to 16 with CSU and AFA?
Those 2 schools flirted with the AAC and it was reported that they wanted the MWC to add Texas schools from major markets. Those schools are no longer available to the MWC so will the AFA and CSU decide they should just join the conference that has all those Texas schools and leave the BSU issues behind?

The C-USA flotsam was added in response to CSU and AFA telling the AAC NO.
The AD's at those schools were interested, the rest of the schools, especially the boosters, not so much.
Now even less of a chance of them joining. AAC can only get weaker.

What an overreaction. Oh no they didn’t make their bowl games in COVID years?

RE: 1 Bowl in 4 years: Has Boise State used up all its mojo? G5 slide...
To the OP:
Yes, Boise State is past it's prime, falling back to it's base resources. That is not disaster, just an above average MWC program. The extra money they get from ESPN does not really impact the rest of the conference much. A prolonged slump may make moot their special media clause, as in the future they may not be able to collect much additional revenue - that depends on eyeballs.
As for the MWC as a whole it probably has minimal impact. Most likely the California schools will reap the recruiting benefits --and arguably they already are, as we have seen San Diego State and San Jose State improve-- of keeping more of the California talent in the MWC home. The Nevada schools are always the greatest threat, much like the Arizona schools are in the Pac-12.
I also think having Lincoln Riley at USC and building that powerhouse by keeping home all that SoCal talent heading to the SEC and other P5 programs will have positive effects on the rest of the State, as players not going to USC will go to their rivals at ULCA, even Cal and Stanford. The ripple effect will be downstream for MWC schools, especially in California, similar to SBC and AAC picking up leftovers from the SEC who stay in region. In that sense an anchor program has ripple effects.
The big question of the MWC, is the same one as today. How do they get visibility. I would argue Boise State had some, the rest of the league almost none. Boise State declining probably doesn't impact MWC visibility, but it does lower Boise State's. And that MWC visibility is less than the other G5 because it's in the less populous West. That isn't changing.

The two-tiered pay scale likely killed that for good. New AAC members get less money than existing MW members. Unless the MW's next TV deal goes dramatically wrong, hard to see how the American would pull anyone out of that league.

I forgot about that. The AAC newbies will be getting $2M for a while, correct?
But to steal those 2 the AAC might be willing to create 3 tiers.

From what money? Are they valuable enough for ESPN to up the contract? Or the old AAC teams willing to take a cut?

I believe the reporting was that they'll start over $2 million and have annual increases every year, but that the two-tier structure will last through the current media deal into the early 30s.
The big problem is that I have a difficult time seeing the incoming members voting to add newer members at a higher starting pay rate than they themselves will be seeing, and the legacy members are unlikely to cut their own pay to make everyone equal. Again, unless the MW's media deal totally collapses and they eat a substantial cut in the next round of negotiations, the numbers likely don't work.

Avalos to this point is a 7-win coach.
Boise is nowhere close to being the program it was under Chris Peterson.
When Mark Snyder took the Marshall job, they were seen as a Boise of their day. A few years later and they weren't.
That's all it takes.
The Boise of yore would be winning big bowls more regularly than every 8 years.

The PAC would've invited them a long time ago if they were interested.
