That makes sense to me. The alumni should be providing more funding
for athletics than the students.
From what I've read, JMU and ODU sock it to their students with the athletic fees.
Our student fees are bad but I believe their fees are much worse.
It's been a little higher, but comparable at JMU. As of 2020, was $1,992 at W&M and $2,340 at JMU. It is likely JMU's athletic fees will move lower with the SunBelt. ODU's were $1,678 in 2020. UVA was $657. VMI was $3,340. Generally speaking FCS schools are more heavily subsidized than FBS ones, and the Cox bill fee limits recognize this.

Possibly though as someone pointed out on other G5 programs, other programs are sacrificed. I think JMU now only sponsors 6 men’s sports programs.
This took effect many years ago, the change was due to title IX compliance. JMU also decided at that time to fully fund all sports they retained, and cut sports where they could not provide full scholarships and support. Unrelated to the FBS move.

I didn’t say the moves took place at the same time, just they are related. The vast majority of FBS programs have to gut other programs, some based on Title 9, some based on revenue shortfalls or a combination of both.
Bottom line, The cost to compete in FBS, unless you are in P5, comes with consequences and financial risk. You sacrifice other programs, game environments (midweek games, moving games off campus, etc), the negative impact on other blue ribbon programs (ODU basketball) and in many cases a stature of winning tradition (Idaho, UL Monroe, Georgia Southern, UMass). It’s not a slam dunk for most.
I’ve mentioned prior that I don’t put JMU in that list as they are one of the few that are primed for the move. But there are costs involved and for most, it’s a huge gamble, particularly now that G5 is expanding with new schools who can’t even succeed at the FCS level.

See attached from AD at Montana. It speaks to the risks of moving and the desire for some of the blue ribbon FCS programs to maintain a strong FCS division. You could imply the same rationale to Delaware, W&M, North Dakota State, etc.
A key quote:
“This subdivision is a great subdivision. It’s an answer for many schools … it’s a place for healthy Division I football that is appealing and can be done in a more cost-efficient way.”
I posted on a different thread before realizing this is likely the better thread for this.

All of this seems like a positive. It forces schools that want to go big to actually go big instead of just spending on football. JMU and ODU look like they moved at the right time. Having the requirements at 210/$6M removes at least some concerns about variable scholarship value. To meet both minimums, the average scholarship value would have to be around $29K.
From the article:
Quote:If adopted, all FBS schools would be required to provide 90% of the total number of allowable scholarships over a two-year rolling period across at least 16 sports, including football. Schools also would be required to offer at least 210 scholarships each year, amounting to no less than $6 million in athletics scholarships offered.
