AAC Baseball 2022
Yep, college baseball season is upon us starting this Friday.
Of note, AAC Conference favorite ECU is ranked #13 in the Coaches Poll, and #12 in D1 Baseball Poll.
USF is ranked #41 in Coaches Poll (along with Charlotte also at #41)
WSU is now ranked at #48 in the same poll.
UCF now comes in at #57 and Tulane starts at #59.
The AAC is currently ranked 5th in ELO. Should be a really good conference baseball season with plenty of competition, especially 2 through 5 or 6.

WSU starts the season with a tough away series with #31 La. Tech.
USF starts their season with a series against UConn (#70); and ECU starts with Bryant.

Good luck to everyone in their out of conference play!

Quick question, is WSU not streaming any games? You've got some good match ups it'd be fun to check out

Good luck in OOC.

3-5 bids is possible depending on what teams do in nonconference play. The AAC has been a solid top 6 baseball league.

ALL SHOCKER HOME GAMES WILL BE SHOWN LIVE ON ESPN +.

Hope that ESPN+ will have a good number of other AAC games available.

AAC definitely should get at least 3 teams into the tournament this year if it is as competitive as it seems it will be.

As a UC fan, I can guarantee we'll lose a bunch of non conference games we have no business losing, then come back to finish 3rd in conference. We're basically baseball's version of Tulane basketball.

Will be interesting to see how USF comes out of the gate. Last year we were very young and didn’t get it going until late in season, to finish just over .500 and going on to win conference tournament, Florida Regional before losing toTexas in super regional. Pretty much entire team returns with some good pitching recruits.

RE: AAC Baseball 2022
I'm cautiously optimistic about UC baseball based on the preseason news and accolades for the team. UC's entire outfield made the AAC preseason team including the AAC preseason player of the year in Paul Komistek.

If UC's pitching improves they could have a very good season.

https://theamerican.org/news/2021/12/29/...orite.aspx

CINCINNATI - Eight different Bearcats were featured in D1Baseball's American Athletic Conference preview which was released earlier this week.

Cincinnati placed two student-athletes in the publication's top-10 AAC prospects for the 2023 MLB Draft with sophomore outfielder Cole Harting (No. 4) and freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Harker (No. 9) both earning spots on the list.

UC was also well-represented in the AAC prospect ranking for the upcoming 2022 MLB Draft. Right-handed pitcher Chase Hopewell (No. 21); outfielder Paul Komistek (No. 24); infielder Ryan Nicholson (No. 31); catcher Joe Powell (No. 33) and outfielder Griffin Merritt (No. 36) all garnered attention as draft-eligible players this spring.

Finally, a pair of Bearcats underclassmen earned praise as both Garrett Harker (No. 6) and Boston Smith (No. 10) were named impact freshman to watch in 2022.

https://gobearcats.com/news/2022/2/4/eig...eball.aspx

And

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati baseball redshirt junior outfielder Paul Komistek was named the American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Wednesday in the 2022 AAC Preseason Baseball Poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches. He becomes the second Bearcat to receive the honor (Ian Happ, 2015).

Sophomore outfielder Cole Harting and redshirt junior outfielder Griffin Merritt were named to preseason All-AAC team along with Komistek, who was a unanimous selection. This is the second-straight season that there have been three Bearcats named to the preseason all-conference team.

The Bearcats were picked to finish in third place by the league's coaches, the highest since joining the conference.

Komistek, a 2021 All-AAC First Team selection, led the Bearcats with a .364 average, 1.058 OPS and .599 slugging percentage last season. He ended the year with nine home runs, 44 RBIs and a .459 on-base percentage.

Harting came onto the scene in a big way as a true freshman in 2021. He started in all but two of the Bearcats' games while finishing the season with an .894 OPS, 10 home runs, 15 stolen bases and 110 total bases.

Merritt, an outfielder from Cincinnati, was named to the 2021 All-AAC Second Team after hitting 10 home runs (tied for the team lead with Harting), knocking in 38 RBIs and ending the season with an .873 OPS.

RE: AAC Baseball 2022
IRVING, Texas – East Carolina has been selected as the preseason favorite in the 2022 American Athletic Conference Preseason Baseball Poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Pirate sophomore Carson Whisenhunt was picked as the conference’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while Cincinnati redshirt junior outfielder Paul Komistek was selected as the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year.

East Carolina received six first-place votes and a total of 48 points to be named the league’s preseason favorite. Tulane was selected second and received 36 points (and one first-place vote). Cincinnati was picked third with 30 points, followed by Wichita State (29), UCF (28), South Florida (26), Houston (20) and Memphis (7). Defending tournament champion South Florida received the final first-place vote.

East Carolina went 44-17 overall last season and won The American’s regular-season crown with a 20-8 conference record. Whisenhunt, who went 6-2 with a 3.77 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 62.0 innings last season, is joined on the preseason all-conference team by sophomore relief pitcher C.J. Mayhue, who had eight saves in 2021.

Tulane finished second in The American in 2021 with a 17-10 conference record and a 31-24 overall record. The Green Wave has four members on the preseason all-conference team (most of any team), including redshirt junior Tyler Hoffman (4-3, 4.24 ERA), sophomore catcher Bennett Lee (.440, 4 HR, 28 RBI), sophomore second baseman Chase Engelhard (.299, 9 HR, 52 RBI) and redshirt senior designated hitter Luis Aviles (.255, 7 HR, 40 RBI).

Cincinnati went 29-26 last season and 18-14 in conference play. The Bearcats’ entire starting outfield made the preseason all-conference team, including Komistek, who hit .364 with nine home runs and 44 runs batted in, redshirt junior Griffin Merritt (.274, 10 HR, 38 RBI) and sophomore Cole Harting (.289, 10 HR, 34 RBI).

Wichita State placed third in the regular season standings with an 18-13 conference record and 31-23 record overall. Sophomore pitcher Jace Kaminska (8-1, 2.32 ERA, 51 K) was a unanimous preseason all-conference selection and was joined by senior first baseman Garrett Kocis (.286, 12 HR, 45 RBI).

UCF (31-30, 18-14) has three members on the preseason all-conference team, including redshirt junior outfielder Gephry Pena (.290, 4 HR, 26 RBI, 27 SB), redshirt junior designated hitter Tom Josten (.253, 8 HR, 31 RBI) and sophomore shortstop Alex Freeland (.288, 7 HR, 37 RBI).

South Florida (31-30, 14-14) won the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship, went on to win the Gainesville Regional in the NCAA Championship and advanced to the Austin Super Regional in 2021. The Bulls are represented on the preseason all-conference team by redshirt sophomore pitcher Jack Jasiak (6-7, 2.93 ERA, 93 K), who was a unanimous selection, redshirt sophomore third baseman Carmine Lane (.306, 11 HR, 43 RBI) and sophomore outfielder Drew Brutcher (.294, 8 HR, 17 RBI).

Houston (19-34, 7-21) is led by senior first baseman Ryan Hernandez, who hit 11 home runs for the Cougars, and has one of the top relief pitching prospects in the league in junior Derrick Cherry, who had five saves and a 2.85 ERA in 19 appearances.

Memphis (18-39, 7-25) returns four starters from the 2021 lineup and will look for Connor Shamblin (from Alabama) and Dalton Fowler (from Oklahoma) to be impact transfers on the mound.

Rumor is AAC preseason pitcher of the year and 17th ranked major league prospect Carson Whisenhunt's suspension very well may be for the entire season.

The loss of the ace of the staff is a major blow to the program and will be the ultimate challenge in seeking a 6th consecutive season or tournament championship.

Hopefully we'll get serious about baseball by next season when our lame duck coach finally retires this summer.

I hope that is what occurs, because the AAC needs Memphis to be a decent baseball school again. Losing UCF and Cincinnati could be largely made up baseball wise with Charlotte and FAU. If Rice could also find a return to something resembling it's former baseball prowess, and all other conference mates continue strong programs the AAC has an opportunity to establish itself as a top tier baseball conference.

Charlotte and FAU are likely an upgrade on UCF and UC. I'm not holding my breath on Rice. Just too many programs in Texas and Rice lost its allure.

Again? When were we ever? I kept waiting for us to break through in the 2005-2010 era... Our players all seem disinterested.

Memphis was an NCAA team in 2007. Rock hasnt done a damn thing since. I was really hoping he would leave after last season. there is zero reason for Memphis to be such a horrible baseball program except sheer complacency and sloth
