For real this time.
Honestly makes sense for both sides. It was either him or MAW, and while Saunders certainly has more upside, it was pretty clear that the starting PG for next year and going forward (look at our 2023 targets) was not on the roster. Whoever stayed was going to be the backup. MAW makes little sense as a starting PG, but a lot more as a backup veteran PG given his skill set.
Add in the fact that MAW over Saunders frees up a spot after next year and it makes a lot of sense. Saunders likely had zero interest in being a backup PG for his final 2-3 years of eligibility.

I'm curious if Wichita will reach out. We were pretty sure we were going to get him the first time he went in the portal. His game is similar to Qua Grants though, so if Qua stays then probably not. If he transfers, I could see WSU going after him.

He would be a good pickup. Made big strides in his shot from year 1 to year 2. Issues he still needs to work on are lateral defending ability on defense (no excuse for a guy that fast/agile to play poor defense like he did), and taking care of the ball.
The first one can be coached with instruction and the second is a maturity thing. He’s got serious potential. His height will always be a problem but can’t win them all. Only reason I’m not sad to see him go is that he’s not a fit on this team going forward. I bet he ends up looking good his final 2 years assuming he takes 3 more somewhere.

I think this was one of those honest conversations - I certainly like Saunders and he has a place on a high major roster but I think Wes Miller has higher expectations for his point guard. He likely sees Saunders as a high level backup/fringe starter and Saunders probably wants more minutes. Wes is in on top 75 Trey Green and 5 star Isaiah Collier for 2023, which would be Saunders' senior year.
I *hope* Miller gets longer and more athletic on the perimeter for next year. Daniel Skillings will be certainly help but it's tough to rely on freshman. Anxious to see who Wes targets.
My HS just completely shut down Skillings. I wouldn't count on him as a true freshman.

Your cake eatin' HS still lost by 12. I'm sure Skillings impacted the game by more than just scoring.

He was the player of the year in probably the top basketball league in Philly. He’s a 6’6 wing with a 7 foot wingspan. I think he’ll be fine!

i saw some BYU guy thinks they'll get saunders. so, who knows. he's fast, but blows more layups than you can count. he's small, so he has trouble on defense. i'm sure that i'll get blasted for this, since we all know that you can't have an opinion that differs from the herd, but i think he was part of the palace coup with brannen. brannen had issues, for sure, but i don't know if the situation was 100% brannen. i think several people share some of the blame for all of the crap that happened. anyway, not upset at all that he's leaving again.

RE: 2022 Basketball Transfer Portal Thread
I wrote my thoughts on Saunders yesterday before he transferred.
Saunders- His strengths are speed and being a much improved shooter. The shooting development this year was encouraging. UC desperately needs him to 1. be more sound on defense, 2. cut down on turnovers and 3. be stronger at the rim. He could get a step on his man but nobody was scared he was finishing over or through the help defense when he did.

Or he could come back home. If we can figure out how to play him and Shead together. Lol

I suspect that will be it for UC. Pretty much the exact number of spots have opened that many of us suspected.

Yep - get a point, a wing and a big. I really like Will Richard from Belmont for the wing spot. Freshman from Atlanta where Chad Dollar has great connections with his AAU team.

we dont even know who is staying on your roster.. assuming you are just losing duren, you dont need anything.. your roster would be stacked still
but ive heard this or that rumor for every single player on your roster but hardaway jr that they might be leaving
you "could" upgrade the pg postion with the current roster, but what are you trying to build the 2018 warriors? the way lomax played the last 9-ish games he is good enough to hold down the spot
memphis and the teams with coaching change is pointless to make a wishlist right now, your roster today could be insanely different in 3 weeks

RE: 2022 Basketball Transfer Portal Thread
Memphis beat Writers Guesses on what he thinks will happen with memphis roster
Going Pro:
-- Duren
could go either way (pro/portal):
-- Minott (always thought of himself as 1 and done)
-- Bates (ended the season amicably- could be promised big role)
-- Jayden
-- Lomax (memphis looking to recruit over him, he is aware)
-- Nolley (leaning towards grad transfer),
-- Williams (loves memphis, might get NIL money)
-- Lester (will want a bigger role, depends what penny tells him)
Thinks they will be Back:
-- Timberlake (doesn't want to sit out), Lawsons, Tyler, Dandridge, Onu.
these are guesses -
note beat writer: mentions of some scary good PGs that memphis will target from the portal.. there are no scary good pgs currently in the portal. he has names but won't mention
