Dude we lived that LOL Marshall came to FBS in 1997.

1997 10-3 Bowl Game lost to Ol Miss
1998 12-1 Bowl Game beat Louisville
1999 13-0 Ranked 10th in the Nation - Bowl Game beat BYU
2000 8-5 Bowl Game beat Cincinnati
2001 11-2 Ranked 21 in the Nation - Bowl Game beat East Carolina
2002 11-2 Ranked 19 in the Nation - Bowl Game beat Louisiville

But guess what... What Marshall, App State, Georgia Southern and Coastal did is NOT THE NORM.. All the other FCS teams that moved up struggled for years to make a mark.

Just because I was curious about this

Of FCS-to-FBS movements since 1990, teams with 10+ win seasons in 3 of their first 4 FBS years:

Marshall
Boise State
Appalachian State

Teams with 10+ win seasons in 2 of their first 4 FBS years:

Georgia Southern

Teams with 10+ win seasons in 1 of their first 4 FBS years:

North Texas, UConn, South Florida, FAU, Old Dominion, Coastal Carolina, Liberty

Teams who failed to win 10+ games in any their first 4 FBS seasons: Akron, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State, Nevada, ULM, UAB, UCF, Buffalo, Middle Tennessee, Troy, FIU, Western Kentucky, Texas State, UMass, UTSA, South Alabama, Georgia State, UNC Charlotte

A bunch of those teams also moved up when it was an 11 game schedule and few bowl games were available to pick up another win. UCF went 9-2 in our third year in 1-A and didn't get a bowl game.

We were 9-2 the year before that with no bowl. And 8-3 the year after with no bowl.

Fewer games and fewer peers and fewer easy wins from other teams in your budget range.

If you joined when there were only 100 FBS teams, that's different from joining when there are 120 or 130 (especially since you're probably joining a league made up of teams in the triple digits on relative strength).

It's still impressive what Boise, App, Marshall did, but using absolute metrics like "10+ win seasons" is a little misleading.

9/11 is better than 10/13.

What? that would be 9-4 or 10-3. How many football games do you all play?

9-2. 9 wins out of 11 games. 11 game seasons back then and fewer bowls (I assume you're kidding).
