Washington Commanders new stadium plans
This week there has been leaks about the Commanders planning to put a new stadium on a site in Woodbridge, Va.. There's also a proposal by the team to put the stadium at a site just outside Dulles International Airport in Loudoun County.
UPDATED: Woodbridge area eyed for new Commanders stadium appears to overlap commuter lot, part of high school site

However, it doesn't seem like Virginia would help subsidize the project, wherever it goes:
Quote:Virginia state senator Chap Petersen, who on Wednesday night released a statement declaring he does "not plan to support" Virginia's pursuit of the Washington Commanders and their new stadium, further explained on Thursday that his concern about the franchise having "no identity" is the reason for his lack of backing.

RE: Washington Commanders new stadium plans
Those proposals are fantasy. Here's reality:
The options for a Commanders stadium site: Bad, worse and nonexistent
Quote:Their reality is this: The club is looking at far-flung sites in Virginia, which has a state legislature that is preparing to sour its offer, not sweeten it. Maryland officials are so indifferent to the Commanders’ presence in Prince George’s County that they’re pledging to pump $400 million into developing the area around FedEx Field even if the team doesn’t stay, a municipal shrug of the shoulders.
And the only site that would be almost universally embraced — at RFK Stadium in D.C. — isn’t controlled by the people who govern D.C. Without fundamental change, it’s not just a romantic notion. It’s a non-starter.
Quote:It’s not impossible for a stadium to be built between now and the time the team’s commitment to its current home is over. The Las Vegas Raiders broke ground for Allegiant Stadium in November 2017 and opened it in July 2020 — less than three years.
But the Commanders have no site. They have no momentum. They have jurisdictions that not only aren’t trying to actively lure them, they’re all but working to drive them away. That’s not because the politics and economics around using taxpayer dollars to help rich owners build stadiums always have been suspect. That’s because of this team at this time — and the man who owns it.

I'm so happy they're using the money they skimmed from the IRS and the other NFL owners for this project.

How do you think Snyder got so rich in the first place?
Be wary whenever you're dealing with someone in business who has stiffed vendors, or tried to pay less to someone else than they agreed to pay, or whatever. If they have a habit of doing that to others, there's a good chance they'll try to do it to you, too.

The most logical site is still the RFK/DC Armory location, but that's federal land. Their ability to commercially develop the surrounding acreage, as NFL/NBA/MLB teams would like to control is currently limited. The RFK/DC Armory site is 190 acres, which is more than enough. However, Congress would need to sell the land back to the District to permit such a "stadium village" concept which the team, NFL, and the District desires. A new owner makes this less toxic and more viable.
A site in Loudon is just as bad as building in Landover was.

Not in my opinion. While at the extremity, the STAR complex is still part of the Washington Mall. Commercial development isn't feasible there.

Snyder and the mediocre on-field performance of the Washington franchise make any stadium negotiations toxic, even with new ownership it’s gonna take a few years to make relationships that will make a viable proposal turn into reality imo. They’re in an awkward holding phase like the Chargers/Rams/Raiders were before they moved, with a bad/meh team and a lousy stadium. Difference is that at least they have a new owner who can build some political capital to make something happen, and with LA/Vegas now occupied I don’t think there’s a market out there strong enough to justify a relocation from the DC Metroplex. This will drag on and there might be loose rumors of a move, but something will get done over the next 5-10 years.
