MTSU AD Massaro Interview on New C-USA Alignment

The four incoming members to Conference USA — Liberty, New Mexico State, Jacksonville State and Sam Houston State — were at the conference meetings just before Memorial Day Weekend. How exciting was it to be a part of that group of nine schools looking towards the future of Conference USA?

We're still in that 'let's get to know each other process,' a little bit. But at the new Conference USA level, we're also focused on 'how do we get better?' Let's take football for example. We can talk about the TV contract, which is one tool to improve our programs. But the real goal is to improve our CFP ratings. That's where there are some revenue opportunities. How do we as a league get better? And it all starts with each individual school getting better.

You look at the football coaches, particularly with some of the new members. Rich Rodriguez at Jacksonville State, for example, that guy has had a lot of success. New Mexico State with Jerry Kill, that guy has had a lot of success. Liberty with Hugh Freeze, that guy has had a lot of success. Sam Houston State, their coach K.C. Keeler, he's got a national title ring with the Bearkats.

Agreed, the clear one is weird.

About his comments:
Improving in the CFP rankings would be nice, but I don't like that comment coming right after the media rights one. It almost seems like a pivot to me. "We would like to make money from our media rights like everyone else, but since we can't we are going to try and get our CFP rankings up so we get more money that way." Doesn't give me the warm fuzzies regarding the upcoming media deal.

Seems to say he is in no "rush" to add members. Leaner also means more money per school (even with a small media deal)-- also talks about concentrating on increasing revenue by doing better in the CFP rankings.

inutech might get his wish-- for a while. One sure way to "wreck" your CFP rating is to add more FCS schools when you already have two to break in.

I predict no new schools on board (eligible) till the 2025-2026 season. Of course announcements could come sooner and all this could change with some big NCAA or realignment event. Also a good strategy if they are waiting on a preferred school to change their mind or react better to any departure.

Again-- I see no urgency at all to add teams in his attitude. Unless media deal forces the issue-- I don't see the votes to expand for 2-4 years. Of course events can change that stance. IMHO also can't see WKU anxious to add anyone at this time.

clt asks how hard would it be to bring the better podium out?

loki notes that the good podium could be pulled out by the little jeep.

clt says this chat page would melt if Judy towed a good podium in a small trailer with her little Jeep.

Out of all of clt's quotes, bigbelly thinks this one is the best!

There is nothing wrong with staying at 9 members.
Less bad teams to drag down your rating more money to split on revenue
