Irony—
I find it ironic that Florida St and Clemson both were SEC targets in 1990. Both passed back then. Fast forward a little more than 30 years later and those 2 are both stuck in the ACC with their crappy ESPN deal and GOR.
Had they moved back then, the landscape would be totally different and both would be safe in a rich and powerful league.

A lot of fake stories circulating right now. This SEC and ACC four is one of them.

RE: Irony—
Tulane probably regrets leaving the SEC. Who knew $100M per team in media rights would be the norm...

No doubt about it. And in the heyday of State of FL football in the 90's...FSU was beating UF 2 out of every 3 games. It likely would have slowed the trajectory of the gator program...which was behind Miami and FSU on the national level. FSU would likely have been racking up the SEC titles and all the exposure that goes with it.

All those BE schools who thought they were leaving us for dead in the AAC and back-stabbed each other to get ACC invites, only to see us get into the BIG while they find themselves stuck in the #4/5 P5 conference.

Yes Rutgers has to be enjoying this immensely, so far the only old BE member safely ensconced in the P2!

Right—I’m pretty sure if you told folks in 1990 that only 1 of those 8 original BEFC schools was going to be in an elite superconference and asked them to predict who it would be I’m sure Rutgers would place 7th or 8th in that vote.

Those 2 leaving the SEC radically impacted everything that happened after that. If those two are in the SEC, they don’t need to expand in the 90s for a CCG and the landscape looks much different.

Imagine Sewanee stayed D1 and in the SEC?

We'd be watching Sewanee-Alabama games on CBS.

This may be the first instance in recorded history where being stuck in New Jersey worked in someone's favor.

Rutgers is in massive athletics debt & never wins. Old school Big 10 fans consider the addition to be the worst mistake the league ever made. Rutgers will never get credit - if they win the Big 10 will be laughed at. I wouldn't trade places.

The presidents of Tulane and Georgia Tech were probably either children or not even born when their schools left the SEC. Same for much of their governing boards. They left in the friggin 60s. How could anyone except people in their 80s who maybe, just maybe, played a role in those schools' decisions to leave the SEC, have any "regret?" Most people involved in those decisions are really old or dead.

This probably deserves its own thread but GT and Tulane’s departures dramatically effected the rest of realignment.
The SEC doesn’t need to expand for a CCG in 1990–they’d already have the 12 they needed and they wouldn’t want to settle for Arkansas and SC when their real goals were Texas, TAMU, Oklahoma, and Florida St.
