Mike, we all appreciate the time and effort you put into the pick em threads. You did it a lot longer than I expected. Any big plans for retirement?
On a related note for anyone who is in to pick-ems, I've been playing a thing called Pigskin Mania for a few years. It's basically a glorified office pool that a handful of sports writers in Arizona put together(run by Jay Gonzales from Fox Sports Radio Tucson). 31 years later it now has 900ish people.
Basic format:
-It's a weekly pick-em against the spreads
-You pay a one-time $60 at the beginning of the season
-Each week you pick 5 games from that entire week's slate (2 NFL, 2 College, and 1 from either, with exceptions for weeks around bowls/playoffs that only have NFL or college available to pick from)
-Each correct guess gets a point. 5 points (perfect week) earns a $30 payout that week
-You can also designate one of your picks as a "lock", which makes it worth an extra half point plus or minus
-There is also a game called the "Pigskin Special", which is usually the game with the most attention that week (so for example the week 1 pigskin special this season is ND-Ohio State). That game is also worth a half-point plus or minus
-If you get 6 points: all 5 games correct, with a +half-point lock, and the +half-point pigskin special picked, you get a $60 payout (tougher than you'd think)
-The game goes on for something like 19 weeks. From week 0/1 through the divisional round of the NFL playoffs/CFP final.
-Along with the weekly payouts, the top 100 players are also paid out. It goes something like 100-51 get their $60 back, 50-26 get $120, and the top 25 have a tiered payout that depends on what is left in the pot(depends on how many perfect weeks are paid out through the year). Last year #25 got $140 and #1 got $5k.
-Shockingly, even with the pool being at 900ish people, I don't think the guys running it take a cut outside of the website hosting fee.
To be clear, I don't benefit by anyone joining up or anything. Some guys at work put me onto it about 5-6 years ago. It makes for good conversation around the office, and makes me pay attention to more games. I also like that you are simply rooting for a team vs. fantasy where you want a guy on one team to throw a touchdown, but only to one guy, but you also need the opposing defense to not let anyone else score, especially the RB that the guy you are playing against has (oh no I've gone cross-eyed). Played with my emotions a little too much. I ended up ditching FFB for Pigskin.
Anyway, just thought I'd share. They have a twitter page:
