Now North Texas, while still in the metro area, is way up in, or near, Denton. I was surprised at how far that was, must be 30-40 miles.

It's one amazingly big metro area.

Phoenix is the same way. We were in Mesa/Scottsdale. My business partner was from Canton so the two of us went to see Ohio State vs Florida in the Championship game. Took us over an hour to get to Glendale with light traffic. Talk about urban sprawl.

In his honor I wore an Ohio State jersey, cap etc. every car that went by me started chanting O-H-I-O! They had no idea I could give a crap about Ohio State.

Went to take a leak in one of the trough bathrooms, Ohio State fans were obnoxious as hell. Even in the bathroom. Florida fans were looking at them like they were yankee hillbillies. Florida fans were all dressed up. OSU fans were drunken idiots.

After the first quarter I was having to console OSU fans the rest of the game. Florida looked like an NFL team next to them.

Houston is also enormous. I live in Richmond, TX (west of Houston), but the part of Richmond I live in is literally a 5-minute drive from the Houston city limits. And I can tell you it takes at least an hour to drive from west Houston to the edge of Houston’s east side.

I'd take Memphis and Navy off this list. IMO they have as much brand power as the 3 departing schools. They just lack in other areas for a P5 invite. Navy i'm not sure would ever get or I don't think it woudl be in Navys best interest to take a P5 offer.

as to the remaining teams, I think SMU is the obvious 1st choice. I also think USF and UTSA will grow in profile.

This year will tell us a lot about whether ECU is back or not. I have a hunch that this team takes another step forward despite a harder schedule. Too many people care about ECU in this region for the Pirates to remain dormant. Bad leadership of the past notwithstanding, that unwavering support is finally paying dividends again. Ticket sales are up and people are excited.

ECU has just climbed out of an all-time low. Nevertheless, look at ECU’s all-time record vs AAC (new and old). Only Navy & USF have more than a nominal advantage and ECU has beaten those teams lately. The laws of averages in conjunction with the trajectory of performance and support suggests that ECU is likely on the way towards establishing some new high water marks. Regardless, I plan to enjoy the ride starting with #13 NCSU coming to Greenville here in a few weeks.

I live in Spring and agree. I went to the 2014 UCF-Houston game (started a day game) and took a about the same amount of time. Worth the time.

I suppose a big negative would be if those new arrivals widely perceived as bottom feeders immediately surpass the legacy teams. Another big negative would be if we all simultaneously poop the bed out of conference.

I actually don't think the former is that big of a deal. Memphis posted losing records in 13 of their 17 seasons in C-USA, including their last 5 seasons before leaving for the American (win totals were 4, 2, 1, 2, and 6). Yet they've easily been a top 4 program in the American and made significant contributions to the perception of the league. Now the latter statement is important. I think the league will largely rise and fall with how the new lineup is able to do in the non-conference. I think the AAC talked a good game from the start but without delivering in some really key non-conference games I think the talk wouldn't have amounted to much.

Who cares. Memphis kicked your ass in basketball for years. What is it 28-11..

Memphis committed to football our second sport in the AAC and we won there too. Take a seat and get a spritzer or whatever. When it mattered you lost. Painful as it might seem.

Was talking about the big boy sport which we have dominated you in almost every measurable way but hey your good though.
