Felt like "heady days" to me at that time, could only imagine what it felt like during Apollo.
But Houston is not just known for the Space Programs, UH is also HEAVILY (even HEAVIER?) recruited for the energy industries, as Houston is the Energy Capital of the World. Probably why the Space theme takes a back seat unfortunately. It should still be a thing at UH, IMO.
If they are going to force us into a rivalry, I think a space themed rivalry with a rocket/shuttle trophy and special uniforms every year would be pretty sweet.
All one has to do is watch an Army-Navy game to see how special uniforms really adds another level of excitement to the game! A rocket/missile style trophy would be like a cherry on top, as long as it doesn't look like Jeff Bezos' sex toy:
If we're going to be rivals now, lets make a good show of it and give each locale an opportunity to toot the Space theme horns a bit!

Tonight’s game against Georgia Tech featured two flyovers. Here is a video of the second.
Stop it, astronauts didn’t call out to UCF for help when they blew their gaskets in space. They called out to Houston.
UCF didn’t exist then. You guys need to stop usurping championships and other schools affiliations. Stop bootlegging stuff
Just stop it. Without Kennedy Space center there would be no astronauts in space to call about blown gaskets, or rockets to send them into space (vehicle assembly building). UCF was around during the Apollo missions and still supplies more aerospace workforce than any other school including UH. UCF (originally FTU- Florida Technological University, name was changed to UCF in 1978)was founded in 1963 for the purpose of supplying the workforce for Kennedy Space Center. It was built to supply graduates to the aerospace industry. No other school’s founding mission (purpose for existing) is comparable. There can only be one SpaceU, and that school is UCF.

Without countless other NASA centers, like Marshall Space Flight Center or Stennis Space Center, there would be NO rockets for Kennedy Space Center to launch into space. KSC is not even the "only" launch location - maybe for manned missions, but Boca Chica, TX, says "Hi!".
Look, KSC is just one of the building blocks to successful missions, a highly visible one - everyone loves smoke and fire! But JSC is in control of all manned space missions and home to the Astronaut Training Center. You don't fly if you haven't trained in Houston. "Houston" was the first word spoken from surface of the Moon!
Not sure why UCF being Space U gets so many people's feathers ruffled. UCF was founded to support the space program and the university has been coined Space U for more than 50 years.

Ok, you be jelly, and we’ll be SpaceU. I know when I think Space flight my first thought is……………………………Boca Chica, Texas.

When Starship starts making those cool launches AND landings at Boca Chica while Artemis is maybe sometimes launching and splash-littering repurposed Space Shuttle parts into the ocean, then you'll know the words, Boca Chica!
Relax, nobody gonna stop y'all from pretending all you want.
