If the 2022 season ended today, the Massey Composite indicates the following average for the newly constituted SBC and AAC:

AAC.......82.6
SBC.......79.9 (EDIT: should be 79.8 - please forgive the error)

The only material difference I see for next season is the AAC losing SOS. Therefore, I think the SBC at this point holds the edge for next season's best G-5 conference overall.

The MWC has experienced a down season, but I do not count them out due to their historical strength.

The remainers are 3-13 against the three quitters so far this year. The top three remainers in the conference standings, a reasonable guess at "next up" are 3-4 against the quitters.

The AAC, including the top of the AAC, will shed some Ls with the departures. W-L impacts every system in the Massey Composite more than SoS.

The AAC has a move-up factor that SunBelt and mwc do not.

Quitters?

If the 2022 season ended today and the AAC only added UAB and Appy St, the Massey Composite indicates the following averages:

AAC.......79.1
SBC.......79.9

Instead of:
AAC.......82.6
SBC.......79.8

Come on that’s not even a real question. Even though the AAC in my opinion is no “G5” I know we can’t stop other people from labeling us as such. However, it still will not even be in the same universe as the other “G4”. We are so far and above the other conferences I really do not know why we don’t have our own NY6 bowl agreement. In time I’m sure we will. The AAC will continue to dominate for generations to come. Markets and academics matter.

Respectfully, on the court and on the field results are what matter most. Academics are irrelevant because the AAC is an athletic conference. Markets matter because it helps generate resources (an input).

How do you measure “so far and above the other conferences” for results?

Wow, even with UAB and Appy sitting at 5-5 having a down season by both program standards.

The AAC will remain the best. 5 of the C-USA6 are playing .500 ball or better. They make up the top half of C-USA this season. And it is almost certain that the C-USA football title game will be between two programs leaving for the AAC. Tulane, SMU. Memphis, & ECU are a better group of flagship programs than what the MWC, Sun Belt, MAC, or C-USA has.

The Sun Belt didn't improve their conference by adding Marshall, Southern Miss, or ODU. None of those programs are contending for a spot in the Sun Belt title game. The Belt's expansion philosophy has built them into a southern version of the MAC.

Boise State is in decline, so the MWC is in decline. I think Thompson was smart to step down as the MWC commissioner.

8 or 9 of the 14 current or future AAC 2.0 teams could be playing in bowl games:

Tulane (8-2)
UTSA (8-2)
ECU (6-4)
SMU (6-4)
North Texas (6-5)
Memphis (5-5)
UAB (5-5)
FAU (5-5)
Rice (5-5)

Agree with this, though I do think MWC having a bad year is just a one-off.

Quitters have won 8 of 9 championships and likely another one this year. Temple won 1 and Memphis won one and shared one.

If Memphis doesn’t dominate at least the league will be wide open

I don't think so. Boise is the flagship of the MWC, and they are clearly in decline. They can no longer afford to pay their coaches among the top of the G5 and their resources and facilities are falling behind the more aggressive G5 programs. Boise wrote the book on how to develop into a premier G5 program, but they just aren't innovative anymore. Basically, Houston, Cincinatti, & UCF took Boise's plan, built their programs, and earned spots in the Big 12.

The AAC may be the best (or one of the top) G5 conference next season, but it's probably premature to count the MWC out just because they've had a bad year. They've been consistently one of the top two G5 conferences. Last year, they finished the season ranked ahead of the AAC:

2021: #1 (AAC: #2)
2020: COVID
2019: #2 (AAC: #1)
2018: #2 (AAC: #1)
2017: #2 (AAC: #1)
2016: #2 (AAC: #1)
