It is wild just how terrible of a talent evaluator Brannen was...and then how terrible of a talent utilizer he was when he stumbled into the one good talent he got.

He was a jerk who lost the team, but I disagree that he was a bad talent evaluator. The notion that he gets no credit for and just "stumbled" into a top 150 kid from Seattle of all places who turned out to be a lotto pick in 2 years is silly.

Notice, I said Tari was a good talent. The stumbled into part was because he had a VERY strong in up there with one of his assistants, wasn't like he was scouring tape at 2am on a Wednesday finding the guy...and again, he started a 6'4" walk-on over him, so yeah, he didn't evaluate his talent very well.

A lot of talent evaluation happens once you've got the guys...and he did an absolutely TERRIBLE job of putting people in a position to play to their strengths.

Look, I don't know why I'm defending John Brannen, but I'm pretty sure he started Rob Banks that one time because everyone else either had covid or was just recovering from it.

I agree with you tho about him not using players correctly. He wanted guys to "submit," remember that?

He did not have the personnel to play his preferred brand of ball, which required multiple 3 point threats to be on the floor at all times, and he was reluctant to adjust the gameplan to suit the players he had. The jury is still out on whether Miller is actually an upgrade, though.

Great another chance to lose to Ohio State in one of the 2 big sports. We haven’t beaten the Buckeyes in a major game since 1962.

It is wild just how terrible of a talent evaluator Brannen was...and then how terrible of a talent utilizer he was when he stumbled into the one good talent he got.

Of the 13 players he brought in I would break it down as follows.
STARTER LEVEL - 4
BENCH ROLE PLAYER - 7
DISASTER - 2

2020
Tari Eason - NBA player
Gabe Madsen - Averaging 13 PPG and 4 Reb - Probably a starter
Mason Madsen - Off the Bench Role Player
Mike Saunders - Off the Bench Role Player
Viktor Lahkin - Starter - Could be a legit starter by the time he graduates.
TRANSFERS
DDJ - Starter
Ivanauskas - Disaster

2019
Mika Adams-Woods - Role Player
Davenport - Role Player
Zach Harvey - Role Player
TRANSERS
Chris Vogt - Role Player
Jaevin Cumberland - Role Player
Jaume Sorolla - Disaster

I don't know much about BC, but Mason Madsen has started 3 of their 5 games this year. And I get that everybody wants to rip on Davenport but he started every game he's played in under Wes both last year and so far this one (and 14 of the 23 he played in 20-21.) Lastly, I'm writing this post-AZ game, but if Victor can build on the confidence he played with tonight, he's got a good shot to be a legit starter this year imo.

Yeah I don't remember the exact details either but Banks started 1 game in 20-21. It was against Temple, we won and he played 10 minutes. UC played 9 players in the game and all of the other 8 played more than 10 minutes including Eason.

In total, Banks only played in 8 games that year (averaging 4.5 minutes in those 8 games including the start). It's a silly thing for anyone to be harping on. Frankly I think the "wanted guys to submit" hangup is silly as well. I guess you can get worked up about the term if you want., but it's basically what all coaches want i.e. "Listen and follow my coaching."

So...5:00pm today, right? Hey, we finally get to face the Buckeyes again! Why does it seem like we always face them with our crappiest teams?

We faced them with a good team in 2019 and mick's only sweet 16 team the time before that. I think we match up well with them this year. Should be interesting.

2019 was Brannen's first year and it was UC's first game and OSU was ranked #18. I'd say everything was stacked in OSU's favor.

Maybe we didn't have a crappy team the Sweet 16 year, but it was far inferior than their Final Four team.

Just seems like we catch them at the most inopportune times.

Sorry I meant the 2018-2019 season (I think of seasons by the year the tournament takes place in), which was Mick's last year. Ohio State finished 44 kenpom. UC finished 29.

I don’t remember playing them a single time during Huggins’ 16 seasons here.

We complain about only scoring 11 in the second half of the NKU game, and rightfully so.

But I’m watching Louisville get boat raced by Texas tech right now and they have a total of 18 points for the entire game with 10 minutes left in the second half!

Louisville looks horrifically bad - like Cronin first year bad. Not even sure how they can be that bad.

Having said that, I'm sure they'll turn into the showtime Lakers if/when they play UC.
