I figured it would be a good idea to start a thread where all things portal can be discussed. Who are we losing? Who's coming? Who should we be looking at?

What positions do you think we will target? Looking at what we are losing, perhaps -
WR1
TE
Kicker (if Chang leaves)
Always OL & DL depth

If kicker is a need, I noticed all-big south kicker Jerry Rice from VMI entered the portal

Lots of fcs level receivers available. I'm curious which receivers shake loose from FBS level programs.

Punter if Whitehurst leaves

18 players from VMI in the portal. They’d better hire someone quickly or they won’t have anyone to coach.

Lots of IVY league guys looking for a grad year or two.

I'm sure some of the VMI players are undergrad, but I believe they don't really offer much (if any) grad programs, so they'll often have a lot of transfers.

I'm fine with Ivy guys that can improve the team. My hope is, with sustained success, to attract FBS quality contributors that can fill in any roster holes the way other top FCS programs do. Schools that recruit well, develop their kids, and attract top transfers stay at the top. It's the difference between a winning team every few years and a winning program that is in the discussion every year.

We should be looking at the BCS portal to see if there are any former recruits or kids local to RVA or 757.

Jacari Carter from Merrimack College. He was a FCS freshman all-American WR & Jerry Rice award finalist after racking up 89 catches for 700 yards and 8TDs and came a couple receptions short of breaking Cooper Kupps freshman fcs record. 2-3 years of eligibility remaining. All purpose weapon at wr/rb and kick returns.

I don’t see why Chang or Whitehurst would leave. IF one or both departs, we have Harvey and Piercy. I agree with adding a P/PK if we lose one, but I think both will stay.

I do think we need a TE, WR, S and a versatile OL.

We dominated multiple teams who have stocked up on fbs transfers this year. Our top receiver came from Auburn but he was really an FCS player from Howard. Freeland was a main cog in our defense, straight from FCS. I trust we will get talented guys from wherever.

I think the reference to Chang leaving was that he walked with seniors this year so he might just graduate and stop playing football, not so much that he'd transfer. Not sure about Whitehurst.

13 players from VMI on the list, 10 from Stony Brook, 6 from Norfolk State and, a bit surprisingly to me, 10 players from Harvard.

I believe the Ivy has a rule that you can't play as a grad student. I'm sure with all the Covid years they have a lot of players who have graduated, but still have eligibility.

I believe WR transfer from Robert Morris, Jack Oedekoven, is the twin brother of our transfer WR, Tyler Oedekoven. Jack had one just okay season.

I want proven FCS performers or underused/unhappy FBS guys. Many of these guys we targeted out of HS. That said, Our staff has shown to have a good eye for guys that fit what we do, so I'll trust their opinions on who we go after.
