Coogs Defeat SHSU
Quote:Houston, Texas - Junior forward Jahmar Thorpe scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead a depleted University of Houston men's basketball team to a 68-46 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday night in Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars went into the game without preseason All-Conference USA point guard Lanny Smith, who suffered an eye injury in practice last Tuesday and was forced to sit out of the game. In addition, it leading scorer, Oliver Lafayette struggled with his shooting for the first time this season, making just three of his 13 shots from the field.

Yet, Houston was able to take control of the game early on the defensive end as the Cougars forced Sam Houston State into five turnovers on its first eight possessions of the game.

"I felt that we smothered them with our defense tonight," Houston head coach Tom Penders said. "We took them out of their game plan, and with two minutes gone in the second half, they just gave up."

The Bearkats entered the game with their best start since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1987. Houston was coming off back-to-back victories over No. 25 LSU and 13th-ranked Arizona with Lafayette averaging 30 points per game.

But, with Smith missing from the lineup, Lafayette struggled getting many open looks. Instead, the Cougars worked the ball inside to Thorpe and Sergio de Randamie, who finished the game with eight points and seven rebounds.

Smith's replacement, Brian Latham, also scored 13 points and had four steals in his first start of the season. Senior guard Chris Lawson played perhaps his best game as a Cougar when he came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points.

The victory raises Houston's record to 4-1 this season and was the Cougars' third straight win.

Houston next game will be in the GMAC Bowl's Coors Classic next Saturday night in Mobile at 5:00 p.m. The Cougars also travel to UNLV on December 20 and to North Texas on December 23 before returning home to play host to Rhode Island on December 27.
I did not get to go to this game as I was still celebrating the wife's birthday. This was a pretty big win to get with our best player out with an eye injury. It is nice to see that we are finally starting to take advantage of our better big men that we have on the court this year.

These coogs are ready to :jimdonnankungfu:
