Conference Realignment: 4 Scenarios for the Future of the Pac-12

If they lose 2-4 more members, absolutely.

Then the Big 12 is a midmajor conference since they lost their two biggest brands.

PAC might be losing a lot more than that… and the B12 actually has a good TV deal.

Here's the most likely scenario that will take place:

Oregon and Washington will join the BIG.

The Four Corner schools (Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah) will join the Big 12.

If California and Stanford get invited to join the BIG and they go, then it's just Oregon State and Washington State who will absorb the MWC, and rebrand it as the new PAC.

If California and Stanford do not get invited or go to the BIG, then they along with Oregon State and Washington State will absorb the MWC and rebrand it as the new PAC.

California and Stanford will be football-only members, just like Hawaii, and put their non-football sports in the Big West. Oregon State and Washington State will be full members of the MWC.

Depending on who they lose and who they reload with they could certainly lose "power" status.

I think there are just enough G5 programs of note left to keep them a rung above the G5, but they have to add programs for athletic performance/potential vs. academics. If Rice gets in and Boise State doesn't then put a fork in the PAC.

The P part of P5 is just made up marketing, which is why the AAC marketing of P6 confused enough people to be mildly successful.

The autonomous part is what is tangibly powerful, and as far as I understand the PAC can't lose it unless it disbands, which since it has autonomy, it won't and just instead refill with whoever it wants from the AAC/MWC.

P5 status is just branding so yes Pac could lose that. As long as it survives, which is very likely, They will retain A5 status.

Question: What good is autonomous status if all of the value has been stripped away?

A PAC that only has original members Oregon State and Washington State left will not have any more value than the MWC or American. Their media contract will reflect as much if I were to guess. The PAC might get some preferential treatment but I doubt that it amounts to that much... or does it?

Until when? Maybe 2025?

If the PAC loses 6-8 more members, it will lose an auto-bid in the CFP.

The big 12 lost their 6 biggest brands and is still doing just fine. I wonder what the Pac and ACC look like after that happens to them?

Especially ironic coming from a fan of a school that would be mid major at best if conferences were reformed today and will probably be in a big major conference in 12 years when the ACC breaks up and all the valuable properties leave

The "A" status doesn't expire and there's currently no mechanism to get rid of it.

The PAC (in addition to literally all of the conferences) does not get an auto-bid to the CFP.

To me the most likely option is between 1 and 2 and that is they sign a stop gap deal that delays some version of 2 thru 4 in 3-5 years.

The PAC (in addition to literally all of the conferences) does not get an auto-bid to the CFP.

Here is the current 12-team CFP structure:
- The six highest-ranked conference champions, as determined by the CFP committee, will receive automatic bids.
- The next six highest-ranked teams will get at-large spots.
- The four highest-ranked conference champions will receive byes into the quarterfinals.

When the next CFP contract is negotiated, I'd imagine the access will be further reduced hence 2025. Also, the "A5 status" doesn't even exist anymore.

IF the PAC loses 6-8 more teams, they will effectively become the MWC version of the Big East, now AAC.

How do you resolve (A), the UCLA subsidy and (B) the Cal State - UC balance issue? And at this point, you just have too many California members.

The UCs probably won't take kindly to Berkeley barging in with an annual UCLA athletics subsidy while the other five get nothing, and the Cal States won't take kindly to being outnumbered. They blocked UCSD from joining alone and didn't relent until another Cal State was packaged with UCSD.

I can't imagine how they will react to Berkeley.
