As a fan of a program that had an AD in that position for 28 years (and probably 18 years too long) I congratulate you! Hope they work out.

I was thinking the same thing earlier. It's the biggest news in Rice Athletics since we won the CUSA football championship in 2013. Nothing else comes close.

Really hope Rice can start rising from where they’ve been. Love me an amazing academic institution that can do sports well.

Congratulations Rice. I hope you hire a guy that understands the new dynamics of college football and how to build your program for the future.

Maybe we should talk to UTSA’s Lisa Campos. She gets the dynamics of college football.

Yeah, but maybe you'd want an AD with a more wholistic approach. That UTSA basketball thread is up to 45 pages now.

Rice has a lot of upside, more than many other “bigger” programs. Maybe one day they’ll tap it

How so? They’ve had 40 years to prove it and nothing to show for it.

Joseph Duarte has a good summary of the Joe Karlgaard era in the Houston Chronicle but it is behind a paywall. It’s familiar stuff for Rice fans - the Owls won more conference championships in C-USA during Karlgaard’s tenure than any other team (I think Western Kentucky fans challenge that statement) but those championships are largely in women’s sports with volleyball, basketball and soccer all ranked nationally at some point. He got facilities built/upgraded, but could not pull off the definitive plan for the football stadium. He claims that construction cost inflation following Covid stymied his plan. His crowning achievement was positioning Rice for membership in the AAC. However the football team has gone 8 years without a winning record and baseball is a ghost of its former glory years under Wayne Graham.
Results are there, you just need to dig a bit and look past how programs like UTSA own Rice in football.
