17 team schedule key - four schools you meet once every 4 years
The best way to keep 8 games and play everyone is to go with 2 annual games, 5 games flipped off and on each year and the four schools you meet only once every four years.

Voila:

NC State:

Annuals - UNC and WF
On and Off - Clemson and GT, FSU and Miami, Duke and BC, UVa and VT, Pitt and Louisville
Once every 4 years - Stanford, Cal, Syracuse, SMU

Clemson:

Annuals - GT and FSU
On and Off - NC State and UNC, VT and UVa, SMU and Miami, WF and Pitt, Louis and Stanford
Once every 4 years - Cal, BC, Syracuse, Duke

Stanford:

Annuals - SMU and Cal
On and Off - UNC and Duke, BC and Pitt, Syr and WF, Clemson and FSU, GT and UVa
Once every 4 years - NC State, Louisville, VT, and Miami

Now anyone who wants to schedule a 9th conference game can. Anyone playing ND can count that game.

That's an interesting solution. Let me have a go. I'll aim for something a little different. Let's get some California-Florida heat going. Sunkist versus Tropicana.

The TV interest should be high, but a practical on-campus reason exists for this, too: similarity in sports.

Let's pit the state schools against each other and the private schools against each other.

---

Florida State

Annual = Miami, Cal

On and Off (though I prefer Off and On) = Clemson and Georgia Tech, NC State and North Carolina, SMU and Louisville, Syracuse and Pittsburgh, Virginia and Virginia Tech

Once every 4 years = BC, Duke, Wake, Stanford

Getting Wake, BC, Duke once every 4 years is not a bad deal.

No deal.

Clemson-FSU is a ratings boon, so we have to do that every year. Clemson-NCSU also needs to happen every year. I'd rate that matchup as higher priority than Clemson-GT.

SCBoy did put Clemson-FSU every year.

I'm the one who suggested something else, in a post you don't quote. (I acknowledged the idea departed a bit from the conventional.)

Tinkering a bit, maybe...

Florida State

Annual = Miami, Cal

On and Off (though I prefer Off and On) = Georgia Tech and Clemson, North Carolina and Virginia, Louisville and NC State, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh, Syracuse and SMU.

Every 4 years = BC, Duke, Wake, Stanford

RE: 17 team schedule key - four schools you meet once every 4 years
So here is my take on the full slate of 2 perm rivals....

Pretty Solid that these would be must have

Miami= FSU BC
FSU= Miami Clemson
Clemson= NCST FSU
UNC= Duke UVA
NCST= Clemson Wake
Duke = UNC GT
UVA= VT UNC
VT= UVA Pitt
Pitt= Cuse VT
Cuse= Pitt BC
BC= Cuse Miami

Best guess (one match is solid the other match could be adjusted) ex GT I'm solid that Duke would be good but of the remaining... IDK so I paired with UofL.

GT= UofL Duke
Wake= Stanford NCST
UofL= SMU GT
Stanford= Cal Wake
Cal= Stanford SMU
SMU= UofL Cal

As for Louisville's only once in 4 years... perhaps BC, Cal, BC, Cal .... ok if I can't pick BC/Cal twice I guess Duke and Pitt.

RE: 17 team schedule key - four schools you meet once every 4 years
Or, you could just keep it simple and give every school 4 annual partners and rotate all the others every three years. One solution:

Boston College....Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, Cal
California...........Stanford, SMU, BC, Virginia
Clemson............Florida State, Georgia Tech, NC State, Virginia Tech
Duke.................Georgia Tech, UNC, Virginia, Wake Forest
Florida State......Miami, Clemson, Georgia Tech, NC State
Georgia Tech......Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Stanford
Louisville............Virginia Tech, BC, Pitt, Syracuse
Miami.................Florida State, UNC, Virginia Tech, Stanford
NC State.............UNC, Wake Forest, Clemson, Florida State
North Carolina.....NC State, Virginia, Duke, Miami
Pitt....................Syracuse, BC, Louisville, SMU
SMU.................. Stanford, Cal, Wake Forest, Pitt
Stanford.............Cal, SMU, Georgia Tech, Miami
Syracuse.............BC, Pitt, Louisville, Wake Forest
Virginia...............UNC, Virginia Tech, Duke, Cal
Virginia Tech........Virginia, Louisville, Miami, Clemson
Wake Forest.........Duke, NC State, SMU, Syracuse

Travel isn't that important in football where you would never have one west coast trip a year. In hoops, I would have Cal and Stanford play each other 4 times (twice home and twice away, always on a week night) and SMU twice. Those two then play every other school once every year for a total of 20 conference games.

RE: 17 team schedule key - four schools you meet once every 4 years
There are quite a few options beyond the option discussed in this thread.

The option discussed in this thread:

2 + 5/5 + 1/1/1/1
2 teams you play every year
14 teams you play once every 2 years
4 teams you play once every 4 years

Other options:

4 + 4/4/4
4 teams you play every year
12 teams you play once every 3 years

3 + 2/2 + 3/3/3
3 teams you play every year
4 teams you play once every 2 years
9 teams you play once every 3 years

2 + 4/4 + 2/2/2
2 teams you play every year
8 teams you play once every 2 years
6 teams you play once every 3 years.

1 + 6/6 + 1/1/1
1 team you play every year
12 teams you play once every 2 years
3 teams you play once every 3 years

0 + 8/8
No teams you play every year
16 teams you play once every 2 years.

4 + 2/2 + 2/2/2/2
4 teams you play every year
4 teams you play once every 2 years
8 teams you play once every 4 years

Yeah- too many teams have more than 2 teams they’d want to play yearly. 4/4/4/4 is the answer
