Nobody cares that Trump lies about affairs he had when he didn't hold public office or how big his inauguration was... Nobody even cares when he attempts to use loopholes that others wrote before he was a politician and they either get accepted (he avoids paying taxes) or they disallow them and he has to pay them. They care when Trump lies about things that impact US... you know, like when his son takes millions in what are essentially bribes while Trump holds meetings with these same people, puts pressure on their opponents from his official position and then claims not to have any knowledge of his son's business dealings, despite actually meeting with his business partners. Stuff like that.

What was essentially done is that we took lots of 20-30 year debt and replaced it with 2-5 year debt... with the normally positive sloping yield curve, this saved a lot of interest, but put us at huge interest rate risk... something that at the time, the same government was specifically preventing banks and insurers from doing (mismatching assets and liabilities). This (along with Fed actions) created an inverted yield curve and massive demand for longer duration assets (but massive supply for shorter assets)... the securitization of mortgage product was also a huge part of this.. private/hybridization of FHLMC and FNMA... reductions in capital requirements for same etc etc etc,... it was a HUGE calculated risk (though the government controlled most of the inputs) and it mostly worked, but was not without risks... some of which were staved off until 2008 with this massive leverage collapsed.
