Rice has won the last three meetings
9 years as CUSA conference mates:
Rice won 6, Tulane 3 (2005-2013)
We split 8 games OOC 1989-1997 played 8 of 9 years (Rice won last 2)
We split 4 games OOC 1979-1982
Rice won singles in 1971 and 1960.
Yea, Rice, like most of CUSA, fattened up on us during the Katrina/Toledo years.
Interesting matchup as it poses Rice's strength (passing O) against Tulane's weakness (pass D)
Sorry for being late to this thread, but you make it sound as though those years were an aberration. Tulane has had 9 winning seasons in the last 42 years. Your current run is the aberration. That said, very impressed by the teams you've fielded under Fritz the last two years. You're finding ways to win close games and that's what good teams do.
And yes, those years were an aberration; we've never had a period that long, that non-competitive. You try recruiting in bombed out city, especially with a coach who doesn't have an inkling about southern recruiting, and see how it goes.
We've had 2 top 10 teams in the last 25 seasons; maybe 30 teams in the country have done that; and one other "G5." Look at the teams that have played football for decades that never even accomplished top 10 once. The Big 12 has a couple of them.
Yea don’t hit them with facts, they don’t like that. Tulane has a few bad years thanks to Katrina and people think that’s the norm. Tulane has played competitive football for decades with a Cotton Bowl trophy in the showroom just for kicks. I think people saw our market, academics, and potential and got super jealous. We have certainly earned our elite status, it wasn’t just handed to us.

Congratulations on finishing with two top ten rankings in the last 25 seasons. But there wasn't just one other G5 to accomplish that as you claimed. Boise State, Marshall, Houston, UCF, and TCU all did so as G5's in the last 25 seasons. Definitely an honor though. Nonetheless, if given the choice between teams who pretty consistently have winning seasons but can't crack the top ten or having 9 winning seasons in 42 years but have two flash-in-the-pan top ten rankings, I'd go with the former any day.
Most of Tulane Football's winning seasons have been prior to the onset of WWII. You've had 23 winning seasons in the 84 years since then. Maybe the 42 years I cited in my previous post were your worst period (as you said, despite both your top ten rankings being during that time of course), but your program has been struggling for far longer than the mere 42 years I initially spoke of.
Love what I'm seeing from your program right now though, and I hope it continues. Like most others, I want our conference to be strong, and hope that those of us who are struggling in whatever sports they may be will step up in the coming years as you guys have in football.

It’s all about trajectory and if you have a committed administration. We had an awful ad and president who actually tried to kill Tulane football and move it down to d2 during the period you cite. The “aberration period” has been when we have had a new president who is committed to sports. So unless we get a new president that’s not going to change. Also a new president would have almost an impossible time de-emphasizing now as the fans and boosters have gotten a taste of winning.

You also got money from USF via the Glazers bank account (they donated to Tulane's stadium while taking parking and concessions money from us). Not blaming Tulane, but this is why we're building our own facility-no more mooching for the Glazers.
