RE: Cigs IU Deal
Ultimately, Cignetti will have to buck 125 or so years of Big Ten futility at IU.
No coach has EVER left Indiana with a career winning record in Big Ten play. The closest was Bo McMillin who finished a 14 year career there with a 34-34-6 conference record. That was back in the 30s and 40s. (the next most "successful" coach had a .376 winning percentage).
Sure, Cignetti could in theory go 7-5 by sweeping the OOC games and going 4-5 in the conference games. Maybe the IU boosters are ok with that?

That is exactly what they are okay with.
Downtrodden programs see bowl game eligibility as a sign of success even if it is misguided.
Pummel a FCS team, best 2 crappy G5 teams and find a way to muster 3 wins in 9 conference games.
Cig even gets $200k each year they qualify for a bowl. Talk about low standards.
Indiana just wants to get out of the laughing stock category and move into the also ran category.

except, the college football fandom isn't that stupid.
they'll see right through the "7-5" and still consider IU a laughingstock.

Indiana fans would love to be Maryland at this point. If Cig comes in a makes them UMD with a bowl win vs an sec team he will be king.

Yeah, a lot of Maryland fans are feeling pretty good compared to where they were 5 years ago. They have a lot of buzz for a basketball school that can barely muster 6 FBS wins.
2023: 7-5 regular season with a bowl blowout win over Auburn
2022: 7-5 regular season with a bowl win over NC State
2021: 6-6 regular season with a bowl blowout win over VT
2019: 3-9 (1-8)
2018: 5-7
2017: 4-8
2016: 6-7, lost the Quick Lane Bowl.
2015: 3-9
2014: 7-5 regular season, pummeled JMU and lost the Foster Farms Bowl to Stanford
Prior to Locks coming to town, Maryland had only beaten 6 FBS teams once while in the B1G.

RE: Cigs IU Deal
As I mentioned at the time of his hire at IU, don’t rule out this being a short term gig until the NC State and UNC jobs open up. He will be on the list at NC State and probably UNC when those jobs open in a year or two, especially if he goes 7-5 at Indiana.
He obviously has history at NC State and in that area at Elon, and he will have a much better chance at winning conference titles and making the playoffs at either NCState or Carolina… he will also have more of a reality check after a couple years at IU that he will not be winning the conference.

Fans bases always want better than they currently have. I promise you there are more than a handful of fans that think Saban should of had more national championships.
There are fans on here that are not happy we are only 15-2 in basketball due to the poor coaching of B.

Counterexample: look at Colorado. Coach Self-Promotion strolls in to town and the world stops turning, and he's the best 4-8 coach the world has ever seen.

Definitely building a team to be Kings of the G5 with all of those SBC and Ohio transfers.

Cignetti’s new friends are having a field day and the football season hasn’t even started yet. Purdue’s FB coach after Purdue blew out Indiana 87-66 on Tuesday.
One comment on the Tweet from a Purdue fan, “Can’t wait to smoke Cigs”

RE: Cigs IU Deal
It seems incredibly dumb to willfully give another team bulletin board material. Especially when the other team has a history of being better than you.
I realize I am not a coach, but I thought he would want other teams coming in totally underestimating his team.
Instead he's giving them plenty of reasons to want to blow them out of the water and have no mercy in it.
Seems pretty dumb.

Well damn - good for him.
https://www.si.com/college/indiana/footb...ss-of-2025
The only reason IU is getting that ranking is us. They got half of their guys from a single top 25 ranked team. No other team in the country poached a single team.
Think that's going to happen again for them? Hell no.
And here's why perception isn't always reality. Of those guys that transferred, most of them were considered "FCS talent". They were not recruited as FBS guys. They were recruited when we were FCS. Those that transferred up, like Surratt, were transferring via FCS.
And now all of a sudden they are one of the top transfer groups in the country?
I realize they brought in some other guys, but a huge portion of their transfers were from one place. That cannot be overlooked.

sort that list by "Avg" and they plummet.
sure, they've added some nice pieces, but the high ranking by default when you pull up that list is mostly due to volume.

I’ve always said that’s the flaw to those rankings, it defaults to quantity over quality. Have a 5 man recruiting class and have all of them blue chippers and you’ll probably score below that humongous class of 3 star players.
I couldn’t care less about that stuff now, I found the other link more interesting. The #1 QB in high school visiting IU, gotta make that already overcrowded QB feel nervous. And part particularly interesting:
Quote:When Cignetti took over as Indiana's head coach, he brought a significant portion of his James Madison staff to Bloomington. Most relevant to Lewis' recruitment, that included quarterbacks coach Tino Sunseri and offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan. A connection to Sunseri is a big reason for Indiana's recruitment of Lewis.
“Coach Tino is my guy, I’ve known him since I was eight-years old," Lewis said in an interview with Wiltfong of 247Sports. "He’s honestly the first college coach to notice me.”

I believe that to be true in hoops with smaller rosters. Quality definitely matters more than just pure numbers.
But in football, you need a lot of guys. So a blend between quality and quantity is an appropriate measurement.
Problem with transfer rankings is not everyone is in the same place.
Some schools need to add 22, some only 2. It’s all over the place and not a good indicator for the following seasons success. Need to look at the full roster for that

You’re right, it’s the transfer rankings and look at Ohio State and Bama proves that point; flip the rankings to average rankings and see where they land. They each have small classes at the moment so they lag behind huge classes.
