1 definite thing for sure
So 1 thing is pretty much undisputable. College Football definitely claimed New Years Day this year. And with 3 quarterfinals going forward on New Years Day- that's probably not changing.

I love CFB and tolerate the NFL, basically it's just on as background noise occasionally and I go most Sundays without watching a minute. That being said, the NFL is the thousand pound gorilla, the only reason there was no MNF last night was because ESPN was able to move it to Saturday to accommodate the Sugar Bowl. If the Sugar was televised by FOX, Cowboys-Lions would've gone up against it and the ratings wouldn't have been close.

I would have been watching MNF and checking the college game during breaks.

With the way these two games played out, I might would have stay tune unless the NFL game was as exciting and meaningful.

College football is such a **** show right now with the opt outs and portal, losing interest daily other than my school.

I don't care. If we had 3 games yesterday with lets say Texas/Georgia or Washington/Ohio St, Michigan/Oregon, and Alabama/FSU- yeah that's going to own NYD.

but there isn't going to be competition from NFL really. Only one would be if NYD was on a Sunday- but there like normal the CFB games move to 1/2.

Unless New Year's day falls on a Sunday.
It's tough to take on the NFL.

Clearly, the thing to do is to keep the Semifinals on New YEars' Day (or 1/2 if NYD is a Sunday)
Quarterfinals 10-15 days before that (3rd weekend of December) on Friday-Saturday on campus (conference champions host)
First Round games 2nd weekend of December

Move CCGs back to Thanksgiving
Sprinkle the rivalry games across Weeks 0-12.
Labor Day weekend big games Thursday night, Friday night, 3 on Saturday, 3 on Sunday, 2 on Monday.

That's 2 years in a row that we've had VERY close semifinals. Hopefully the Title Game is better this year.

The NFL has been expanding their reach in every direction.

In a future week 17 where NYD falls on a Sunday, they'll still have an MNF on 1/2, unless ESPN facilitates a move like this year. Same thing if NYD falls on a Thursday which is their amazon night, or a Saturday, which they're increasingly making their own late in the season. And I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 10 years the NFL tries more Friday games, or Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

ESPN is basically the mob at this point, the only player with enough weight behind them to help the CFP protect any worthwhile real estate.

I think this trend will continue. The portal is filling in gaps and lifting the floor on the more prominent brands in CFB. I think it'll lead to more strength at the top of the sport for more competitive games.

Thing is end of the season NFL does sort of go much more Sunday only.

Looking at calendar when NYD is a Thursday, Labor Day is as early as it possibly can be- Sep 1. Therefore, NYD is part of week 18 for NFL, where they only do 2 Saturday games and rest on Sunday.

RE: 1 definite thing for sure
So much would depend on the matchups and games IMO (for both the NFL and College Football). We got incredible, incredible games yesterday. There was a lot of hype for both matchups, and neither contest disappointed. If those went against the Cowboys/Lions, which also went down to the wire and featured two top teams, boy - as a viewer, I would be flipping back and forth constantly. Now, if it was a non-flexed Carolina/Jacksonville game? I wouldn't be surprised at all to see college football dominate the ratings.

So much will depend on where the Sunday of NYE/NYD falls. When NYD is on a Monday (or really any day but Sunday), there won't be issues.

The CFP isn't "protecting" anything against the NFL, but it's a great opportunity for us football fans to get some extra football days around New Year's Day every year.

NFL: Sunday, maybe on Saturday or Monday too depending on what day of January they fall on
CFB: New Year's Day except if it's on Sunday, schedule all other Bowls around gaps in NFL schdule

The real losers here the every non-Football sports.

ESPN absolutely serves as protection for the CFP. If the Sugar Bowl was airing anywhere else, ESPN would've left Cowboys-Lions on Monday night and effectively forced the CFP to move the Sugar. Don't think it's a coincidence such a gesture was made as the 12 year contract nears its end and several players have talked about bringing in other broadcast partners.
