What changes will be made to the bowls for the new 12 team CFP era?
Requiring 7 wins for a bowl.
Accesss bowls for the non-CFP G5 conference champs.
Bowls not home sites for 1st round.
All the bowls under one TV contract.
Probably nothing at all.

Well, campuses will hold the opening round. Then it'll rotate to the NY6 for the rest of the Playoffs. And you'll still have regular bowl games for the rest. I still think 6 FBS wins will be the criteria to get into a bowl game.

So those that earn a first-round bye in a 12-team bracket won't get a home game and may have to play at a site more convenient for their lower-seeded opponent in order to serve the needs of the chambers of commerce at Pasadena, Miami, New Orleans, Arlington, Glendale and Atlanta?

In my opinion get rid of the bowls. They’ve lost a lot of their value. Instead do this…
CFP Playoff. 16 Teams. Each conference champ gets in + 6 at large bids (or top 8 champs and 8 at large if we really must). Games could be played at traditional bowl locations as a playoff game and all playoff locations are bid on prior to season. They can choose to bid on first round, second round, quarters, semis, and championship games and that would be set prior to the season starting. No conference tie-ins would exist to any venues.
NIT-Style tournament: 32 teams. You could have a provision for conference runner ups getting an auto bid if not in CFP or do 32 straight at large picks. I like having runners up having an auto bid myself. Games could either be held on campus or bid out in traditional bowl locations like the CFP.
16 + 32 = 48. Of the 135 FBS teams we’ll have that is 35.6% of teams in postseason. There could be a caveat to allow 6-6 or better teams to schedule an additional game if not selected, but it’d be at the expense of the schools. Whoever hosted would dictate which TV partner gets the option to show the game. I could see some P5 teams wanting to do that if they felt the ticket gate would be worth it. New TV contracts could account for those additional games as well.

There might be a slight reduction in bowl games (reflecting that there will be 4 fewer bowl teams with the 4 losing teams in the first round of the playoffs), but none of the drastic changes that are choices in the OP poll.

ESPN controls most of the non NY6. The use it to fill schedule holes in December, and not much else. Unless there is a move from their advertisers to stop buying ads for these games, then there is zero motivation to do anything.
Therefore, I voted for nothing will change, beyond a Bowl or two will move to not conflict with a first round Playoff game, or if FOX splits the package with ESPN, to maybe run parallel to the FOX game for some G5 vs G5 Bowl game.

Quote:Sean Frazier is an idea guy. A former Alabama walk-on, the Northern Illinois athletic director is working overtime trying to find a place for marginalized schools like his to matter.
"There has to be somewhere for those teams to pursue their dreams," Frazier said.
While the College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams beginning next season -- theoretically providing more access to Group of Five programs via automatic qualifiers for the five highest-ranked conference champions -- it's not enough access for some.

I don't know about a full out NIT but you could do an NIT type seeding for the next 8 bowl games.
Using the next 12 major bowls as an example:
Citrus 1 vs. 24
Alamo 2 vs. 23
Holiday 3 vs. 22
Sun 4 vs. 21
Music City 5 vs. 20
Las Vegas 6 vs. 19
Tampa 7 vs. 18
Texas 8 vs. 17
Liberty 9 vs. 16
Gator 10 vs. 15
Charlotte 11 vs. 14
Independence 12 vs. 13
It would include CFP ranked 13-25 and the 4 G5 champs not chosen in the CFP. After that selections can be best available brands.
The seeding would be set up to help the brands score favorable match-ups and play their own conference mates if they had to which is becoming necessary with these super conferences.
Moving the bowl games away from the tie-in format makes a lot of sense when they've become national anyways, at least in the case of the P4.

I would cut it off at 9 Bowls and 18 teams, but I agree on the teams selected. I would also give each bowl 1 tie-in vs. at-large with the exception being the Citrus, who'd still get top B1G available vs. top SEC available. 11 CFP games + 9 NIT Bowls = 20 solid postseason games featuring 30 teams. You'd still have 26 bowl games after that.

That is the structure that Sankey, Bowlsby, Thompson and Swarbrick came up with, that all 10 conferences agreed to (at least for 2024-25). Continuity is a better bet than disruption.
And the biggest supporters of the legacy bowls have been the Big Ten schools, who are the ones who would be doing the most traveling. (They're traveling from the wintry Midwest to the sunny south and west, of course).
New Years Day bowl trips are a pretty popular tradition.
