enshrined as the 2 teams that get buys to the 2nd round included in the structure of the playoffs? As opposed the highest 2 ranked teams?

I'd like to think they don't have that much political power in this but they probably do.

I know the coaches balked at the notion when it first came up and it seems to have gone away but that doesn't mean it won't come back.

1. I hope it won't come to that and we'll stay at 12 for a while.

2. If it does happen, I think that will be a tough sell, and that I'm not sure either the SEC or the B1G want to always cede one of the two byes to the other. The SEC may believe that they will often have both #1 and #2 in the rankings (and they have a better chance of that than the B1G does). And no other party to the CFP deal will want to give them both a bye every year.

They won't say that. They'll say the top 2 ranked champions will get byes and the B1G and SEC will never not have the top 2 ranked champions.

the SEC/Big 10 don't even believe that because why would they want the stipulation in the first place?

If the ACC, XII, and other conferences "agree" then that further wedges the gap because now the other conferences have affirmed the B1G and SEC are deserving of privilege in the playoff system.

I think that it would be a stupid way to run things, and I'd be very much against it. I also think that it only happens if the P2 actually pack up and leave. Most likely? It was floated out there, got too much blowback, and the "compromise" is the 3/3/2/2/1/3 model.

But who gets the first round byes?

Huge mistake to give them that psychological edge. And while the SEC would almost always be there, the Big 10 gets displaced by the ACC or Big 12 around half the time.

Double bye for the top 4.

If the SEC and Big 10 want to be there nearly every year, they could do a double bye for the top 3. The SEC would be one of the top 3 all but 2001 in the BCS/CFP era. The 2024 Big 10 members would have only missed 3 times and not since 2011.

Is that the plan? I thought it was just 2 byes in the first round.

Big Ten and SEC wanted their conference champs to automaticly get the 2 byes.

I think the compromise will be that the top 2 conference champs get the 2 byes. It's not the end of world if Big Ten or SEC champs don't get a bye and have to host a first round game instead.

There are a lot of ideas floating around out there.
