What might have been
I recall someone on this board (Karl?) stated that we were looking at hiring Josh Schertz before our Chancellor told Chasse to hire Darrell. Josh Schertz was 337-69 at DII Lincoln Memorial. Our last DII hire worked out quite well. Schertz was eventually hired by Indiana State and went 11-20 his first year. However, he was 23-13 last year and 12-2 so far this year. I guess you don't go 337-69, even at the DII level, without knowing how to coach.

Indiana State now 16-3

RE: What might have been
Probably wouldn't have kept him for long if we had hired him;

Josh Schertz, Indiana State
Josh Schertz has turned Indiana State into a legitimate juggernaut, leading one of the nation’s most potent offenses to a 22-3 (13-1) record to their first AP ranking since the 1978-1979 season on Monday, Feb. 12.

As one of the hottest mid-major names in the sport, Schertz’s name will pop up in various searches and given the fact that Indiana State’s Director of Athletics, Sherard Clinkscales, stepped down in early January, it makes it even more likely that Schertz would be willing to move to a power-five gig next month.

RE: What might have been
Pat Forde just put an article online arguing that Louisville should hire Coach Schertz. Of course, their fans want a “big name” but he thinks Schertz would be a home run hire. Amazing to look at the 2 coaches Chasse wanted to hire. Not sure he has done as well in south Texas, although I haven’t checked lately.

In 3 seasons Figger has won only 11 conference games at utrgv. 2 of them this season.

RE: What might have been
I just looked it up and the UT-RGV men were 2-18 in the WAC and finished dead last. The women's team was also last at 5-15. Wonder how fans down there are feeling about Chasse right now. He is certainly someone who is hard not to like. Also, I think the boosters are most invested in the coming football team and Chasse seems to be moving this along very nicely with the first games scheduled for the Fall of 2025 and over 3250 season ticket deposits in hand. It would have been interesting to see if Chasse could have built a football team here in Little Rock. But, honestly, I don't think it would've worked.

UTRGV fired their basketball coach, 2017-2018 OVC coach of the year, Matt Figger. UTRGV is also leaving the WAC for the Southland Conference beginning July 1.

I highly doubt Chasse will try to hire this season’s OVC coach of the year.

RE: What might have been
Josh Scherz is now rumored to be the next coach at Louisville. Yes, it would have been nice to have had him here for a couple of years, but he would have been long gone now. At this point, we have the reigning OVC Coach of the Year. Really don't think he is leaving. The question is, can he follow-up this season with another good one? Wasn't able to do it a few years ago. Hopefully, he can do it again next year. Coaching is a tough gig. Fans will certainly be asking for his head, once again, if we struggle next season.

Louisville boosters are fighting it. Want a "name" hire. Already were turned down by Scott Drew and Dusty May. Interesting to see what happens.

IU fans were bitching big time in 1971 when we hired our "no-name" instead of Walt Bellamy. As you know, many fans are idiots.

Ya, just read an article about Villanova fans bitching when they hired a "no name" coach from Hofstra named Jay Wright. Turned out okay.

RE: What might have been
Coach Schertz reportedly turned down Louisville, who has now moved on to Pat Kelsey of Charleston. Schertz apparently had agreed to be the coach at St. Louis, after the NIT, because he thought his friend Dusty May was taking the Louisville job. Nice to see someone with the integrity to stick with his original commitment. Some would view it as "stupid" since Louisville likely pays a couple of million more. I think moving to St. Louis is the right "step" for Schertz at this time. If he is as good as advertised, he will win there, and then make the leap to a Power 5 team in 4 or 5 years. I see St. Louis as somewhat of a sleeping giant, since it is the biggest city without an NBA team that I can think of.
