The coward retired because he was afraid of the CFP tournament next season. The Washington coach won't last 4 years. Most of the two deep will be in the portal soon.

Or maybe he was ready to get out of the rat race at 72?

This was his best coaching year and a 50 yard drive away in regulation from going to the championship game. He would had done well next year

He's 72. I don't think people understand how old that is for a football coach. Maybe he is just tired of it. He dedicated most of his life to football.

He spelled it all out in an interview with Reese Davis on ESPiN a few days ago. He didn't make the decision until the day it was announced. Word on the street is he was in the office in the morning, talking to recruits and setting up interviews with replacement coaches. In the afternoon, he came in and went up to the AD's office to discuss it and then had a previously scheduled meeting with the team later in the afternoon. In the interview, he listed his age and energy to do the job to the level he wanted to do it, the grind and toll this particular season took to go from where they started to where they finished took, and how hard it was telling recruits he was going to be there 4-5 years when they asked and then having them dodge the question when he turned the table and asked them the same question.

Just thought I would pass it along, not that anyone on the board really cares to know the details since it will be in the NTR forum before too long....

I get that. But there have been rumors for a couple of months on this. I sincerely doubt it was as spur-of-the-moment as he makes it sound.

Earlier this season he and his wife bought a house in Florida. In the retirement section I suppose you'd call it.
The handwriting was on the wall. It's like he had the thought earlier in the season, revisited it after the season ended.
